I saw this link on another forum, and while it's heavily oriented towards American cars, there are some fascinating devices / features listed, some of which a few of us in the UK might recognise:

I still have a Gunson's glass spark plug, it came in very useful for setting the carbs on my old BMW R75/7. Included in the kit was a plastic tube with a mirror on the end which fitted over the plug, so you didn't have to put you eyes directly in line with it in case the cement let go and turned the spark plug into a bullet.

Something else you don't see these days are advance/retard levers for ignition timing.
