My clues? Nice stainless steel frying pan. The underside is now covered in a black carbon like gloob.

I had considered a Vic Reeves comedy whack of the pan into the wife's face. Thinking better of this I recalled a post on here that mentioned something that softened up the carbon? Can't find it.
