Hi

Was checking over the car before a continental trip at the weekend and discovered the bracket on the rear silencer was rusted. Took the box off and welded it up. Didnt take a pic of the finished job but you will get the picture.
This would have eventually given way had i not intervened and welded it.

Easy fix and hopefully another few years out of the system

Welding nearly complete just the two sides of the braket to do. These took a lot of weld build-up because of the rusted bracket. Didnt get a final pic and it wasnt as rough as you might think:)

I can do most things in life but not welding.

You have put a few more years back into it, it looks generally very sound, nice neat weld.:)

It is easy with the mig. A novice can pick it up very easily

The bracket that ties the exhaust to the gearbox also tends to snap. I guess speeds bumps all over Ireland eventually take their toll.

Hi it got a run of welding too, actually had to take front section off at the manifold to do it properly.

Hi
Mine rusted through last year, I got a local welder to fix it for me. A very :)good job he did aswell and all for a tenner!:bannana:

Mine went last year too! Had it welded up, but I expect it'll go again eventually. Anyone know how much a new one is?

I can not remember the exact price but it was over £200 as it was going to be cheaper to have a custom stainless steel silencer made by longlife exhausts at a cost of £200 than to buy a genuine Merc replacement. Only issue with this was that my insurance company then wanted to increase my premium as it would be a non-standard part.

centre box (non OEM is £90 ish)As a matter of general interest I did this to a customers car yesterday.

Thanks for the input and the welcomes.

I've got something to work on now.

I'll have a good look round the car and then a good look round the forum and I'll be in a better position to understand my new venture into Mercedes.

Thanks again.
