Following on from the other thread , what about the bargain cars you were pipped at the post for ?

Mine would include the 190SL advertised in the late 1970's for £200 ; phoned up and went across to Glasgow for it - to find it had been sold before I got there .

Same story with the 220S Ponton Coupe advertised for £300 in Dumfermline in the early 1980's - still available when I phoned , sold when I got there a couple of hours later .

Then there was the W108 280SE 3.5 coupe I saw just arrived in a scrapyard , still complete and quite tidy looking , offered the complete car for £50 and I passed on it ! Kicking myself now .

Also remember the 300SL Gullwing coupe advertised back in the 1970's for £1500 - seemed a bargain even then .

In 1966 I bought a pre-war Morris 8 Tourer for £45 (including a host of spares). I ran it for 2 years as my main car and then sold it for £50. I wish I'd kept it because they're fetching around £6K now.

Ouch-life is made up of many "what if.. " moments.

Not a car, but a registration number: XLR 8 advertised for £800 in the mid-nineties

Took me a minute to get that , slowly realising the phonetics played a part .

Working with pro audio equipment , my first thoughts turned to XLR connectors and who would want a numberplate related to those .

Mk1 Lotus Cortina for £600-700.
I would have wrecked it anyway...

Loads of stuff to be honest - mostly forgotten now.

I remember an original RS1600i that had been sitting in someone's front garden for ages, that I could have bought at the time for £250.

I missed a (nice!) Evo-1 2.5-16 for a very good price a couple of years back. Probably worth around double what I could have bought it for today (although I suspect I would have kept it regardless of value :))

Missed an original 100k miler 2.3-16 for a great price 5/6 years ago, but as a result I found my (now sold) mint sub-100k 2.5-16 that had just had a £4k service at MB etc. Probably the best car I ever bought - so every cloud has a silver lining and all that

About 10 years back I didn't buy a low mileage, mint RD500 YPVS for £1500. I know the guy who bought it (still has it) and I suspect it's worth a good bit more than that today.

A mini cooper S 970cc. Ex competition car , highly tuned , revolution wheels £220 . ( that was back in the early 70s though ). It was very tidy , but after agreeing to buy it from a workmate i was unable to sell my Ford consul capri .

Vauxhall Firenza Droop Snoot for sale on a driveway probably 10 years or so ago. Convinced Mrs D it was worth a look and it had sold. If I ever saw another for £1000 I'd buy it on the spot without consulting Mrs D. Worth much more than that :(

Pah!

A Magnum would have been better!

Jokes aside,

I really wanted a Magnum in 1982

In white

I can't ever recall seeing a Magnum in any solid colour, especially white. Mine was Gold..

The white Magnums are the nicest although the caramel ones aren't bad. Not keen on the almond ones though.
