What is this car worth?

Saw this Jag XKR Convertible on Ebay. Rubbish advert (no surprises) and I contacted the seller for more information.

The car is a Cat D insurance write off after an accident in 2007 -when the car was 3 years old. The seller claims 'light frontal damage'. I assume the car was worth in excess of £25K back in 2007 so it clearly cannot of been 'light' for the insurance company not to repair it! I asked about service history - it hasn't got any!! The plate doesn't come with the car either.

Whilst it is a lovely looking XKR bidding has been frantic up to £10K. I wonder how much it is worth - not that I would buy it!

If the repairs can be authenticated - which may be doubtful given that there is no history with it - then the BIN price seems quite good. If the repairs cannot be authenticated, then it's not worth £5. IMHO.

Also, the claim of 0-60 in 4 secs is complete gonads.

Thought as much. He/She said the car had been repaired by 'our own insurance approved garage'. It strikes me as too much of a risk to buy something like that at the price he wants.

As for the 0-60 s... thats not the only thing that is complete gonads about the ad!

I would not even think about what this vehicle is worth :)

Someone with perhaps more money than brains will buy it and then complain..

How many times have we read of buyers listening to sellers claims and then moan..

The car sounds like a dog, and the seller is barking like a dog and could it then be a dog? :)

Is there anything wrong with that bonnet line or is it just not properly closed?

0 - 60 mph on an XKR = 4.9 secs, you can get them into the low 4's with a pulley change on the superchargers

It has sold then? I can't access ebay from work! The bonnet was not shut properly there is (was) a note at the bottom of the ad.

I still fancy one though!

Yep sold on buy it now, I must admit they are a nice car the growl of the superchargers on full throttle is awesome

Sorry mate, but that's the time for the current XKR, and the coupe at that. The new ones are aluminium as well, so you're talking about a much lighter vehicle with both those factors accounted for.

The book time for a 2004 (steel) XKR conv is 5.6. So a claim of 4.0 is still complete gonads - even with a pulley change. And if it had had the work done to achieve that time, surely the owner would have used it in the sales pitch?

Autotrader has a few pukka ones for under £20k, so the 'lucky' someone is entering a whole world of pain, methinks...:(

The standard 370bhp supercharged 4.0 litre AJ-V8 as in the XKR could accelerate 0-60 in around 4.9 - 5.2 seconds depending on the driver, plenty of examples on You Tube. They run the 1/4 mile at about 12.9 secs at a terminal velocity of around 110 mph, you can get into the low 4's with mods,

Not disputing the book figure for this car might be 5.6 and was just illustrating what you can get out of this engine not inferring the car in the ad had the pulley mods.

But I totally agree someone is in for a whole world of pain with that £15k buy, if indeed it actually did sell?

Edit Whoops you probably right there I looked up the hard top coupe not the soft top and I pesume the convertible is heavier than the coupe :-(

No - I agree with you. A wonderful engine and capable of some serious times in the right hands, as you say.

If I sounded critical, it was only aimed at that car/owner, not the XKR in general and certainly not you personally!

My motoring history is very Jaguar-biased, and I have had the good fortune to spend many a pleasant hour in each front seat in various XK's and XKR's - both open and closed. A good friend of mine has had several over the recent years. My most memorable journey was from the West Mids to Le Mans in an XKR coupe one evening, which included missing the cross-channel ferry and having to divert via the Tunnel to make the rendezvous time. It was a very rapid transit where whoever was doing passenger duty at the time would call out any overtaking opportunities as they came up. I recall exiting a roundabout and receiving the call to go! and nailing it. We passed several artics and cars and I pulled in once we had cleared the lot to discover we were doing 135mph!! The manoeuvre didn't take long at all and the s/c whine was glorious.

By the way, do you know that the new 5.0 s/c engine doesn't whine? They've managed to silence it. Shame!

Not a problem, I have not been in a car with the new 5.0 engine yet but those who have tell me it is so quiet it has lost some of its character as it has no growl.

If you are a Jag man you might be able to help me with my other thread HERE

Looking to buy a XJ for my father in law and trying to weigh up the pros and cons between a XJ6 and XJ8 all comments welcome :)
