That is for the blue tooth module needed to us your phone.

Hi, it's to do with a bluetooth connection.
Looks like it is a cover for a connector underneath but it may be just a protector for the cabling underneath.

Yep, there would have been a snap on adapter. This pre-dates blue tooth technolgy.

Yes underneath that there is a connector that fits the bluetooth adapter in the photo above,this will allow your phone to connect to the car and then you can start or end calls on the buttons on the steering wheel and talk hands free,the above advert is a good price for that item.
