just nosing around my engine bay trying to size up weather it is possible to replace a glow plug without removing the manifold (worth doing i know but safe for an unrainy weekend) and noticed something that has broken on the flange of the manifold.

Looking at the black plastic cover with the merc star that the throttle cable sits on. To the right side where the manifold springs from just under the very edge of the plastic cover there is a black plastic/rubber thing that appears to link the first 3 manifold pipes. It looks like it could just be a bolt cover but it also looks like to could carry a gas of somekind.

Anyway this appears to have broken away from the manifold for at least the first 2 pipes. it cant be pushed back in as some of the plastic has stay in the holes. Looking at the rear 3 pipes there is also the same thing but looks to be intact.

What is this and should i worry that it looks broken?

i dont know what bit you mean (unless you post a photo) but i can say that you cant do the glowplugs with the manifold on

nicked one of your pictures of your engine bay from another thread.....

pain that i cant remove the plug without taking the manifold off. waiting with baited breath to see how you get on with it and the write-up you have promised!

i'll have a look tonight to see whats there on mine. may be able to take a photo so you can compare

i think that fan is there for the Air Conditioning..... my other 124 (same multivalve engine) (no aircon) hasnt got it.

i assume you cant change the plugs without removing the IM - cant see how you could get to them - apperently its easy to remove so probably a lot easier even if you could.

i havnt removed mine yet - need to have a weekend free to do it - just incase it all goes pearshaped!! i planned on doing it this weekend but need to wait on a couple of washers .... :(

Those are the rubber bungs that connect the crankcase ventilation system to the inlet manifold that I've mentioned as being fragile once or twice in previous posts. It's worth having a few in hand if you are contemplating removing the manifold, because they tend to become brittle with age.

You can actually remove the manifold by disturbing only one of these bungs - the one by the foot of the accelerator bracket.

The part number is 6060160081, and I bought some a few weeks ago for £1.50 each.

These bungs serve a very useful purpose, they channel oil blowby from the crankcase down onto the back of the inlet valve seats - if the valve guides and seals are in good nick, oil passing via this route is virtually the only lubrication the inlet valve seats get!

they dont seem to be single bungs but a rail of 3 and another rail of 3 the other side of the throttle cable.
nothing seems to be leaking out of them but the are definitely broken away from the holes.
$64,000 question.......can this be replaced without removing the manifold.

The bungs I mentioned are part No 56

http://www.detali.ru/cat/oem_mb2.as...GM=717.433&CT=M&cat=19T&SID=01&SGR=075&SGN=08

There's also some part No 59 fitted on there which might be the broken ones you have seen - I haven't touched them on mine, they were OK.

To fit them, you just need to take off the crossover pipe and black plastic cover - you don't need to take the manifold off. However, if you are doing glow plugs, etc, you do need the manifold off, and it's best just to replace all of these fragile bits like the injector pipe clamps as you do the job. i.e., do it once, and do it right!

Pics of mine if they are any use:

i think i will order a couple of these then before i remove the manifold.

you guys got it.

if i quote the numbers listed there to MB will they know what i am talking about?

Is this the type of part most MB dealers will carry in stock?

I got the part number I quoted higher up in this thread from the Russian site I posted the link from, and it agreed with the part number of the parts I bought. I don't know about the other part (59) on the drawing, as I've never bought one.

The best way to find out about stock is simply to ring the dealer and ask. If they aren't in stock, this type of part is typically available either next day from Milton Keynes, or with a day or two's delay, from Germany.

i will do this this afternoon as MB Brentford have the parts in stock. I believe i can do this without taking the crosspipe off as the broken ones and toward the front.

More in the way will be the throttle cabling. not so much the arm across the cover but the junk on the right (green circle).

If i need to remove the crosspipe are there any seals or gaskets that need to be replaced?

I will take off the manifold off soon to do the glowplugs and fuel seals and stuff but i will just sort this first today.

I might try and order the parts now though as i am popping into MB. Would it be possible for you to list the stuff you are getting to do this with the MB part numbers Derek? At least then the kit is ready when i take it on.

Thanks again guys.

Your engine bay is very clean indeed - very nice - what did you use on it?

re glow plug changes - removing the manifold is likely to be the easy part of that job. It is worth reading up about glow plug changes before starting - it needs patience, the right tools and time - otherwise you run the risk of breaking a stuck plug in the head - and then it gets expensive....
if you are not sure about it then get a really good independent who knows the cars to do it - dont give it to your local garage.

Part numbers i've ordered. This is based on a 1994 W124 E300D ESTATE. I have posted these on this thread as not all are relevant so i didnt want to clutter the 'Clear Lines' Thread.

W617 589 01 09 00 - Special tool
A606 141 00 80 - IM gasket

A6030780141 - some clips (i got a few of these as they are cheap anyway)

A0049974540, A0000741759, A0179974148 - o-rings and 2 sets of copper washers (not sure which i need for my model yet, but i think its the bigger type)

A6050701432 - clear fuel line going into pre-filter. There are all the other clear lines to get aswell by the way.

A6010920105 - pre-filter

A1104700486 - fuel strainer in fuel tank (estate specific i believe) - comes with O-Ring

A6060160081 - bungs that break when you remove IM

thanks Derek. I have pressed 'Print' and will be taking the list to the MB dealer with me. Any idea of a total price for that? I remember you saying that the special tool was the most costly thing, can you remember how much this was? Is it the 'star' tool to take of the special star shaped bolts on the top of the manifold?
I dont mind paying for consumables but it annoys me when i have to pay for special tools i am only going to use once!

its to remove the delivery valves. the manifold is removed using Torx (T30 i expect). Cost was about £25 i think. I dont think the dealers like to sell these to the public - its a special tool meant for dealers only i think. hopefully they wont care though.... it can be bought elsewhere for just a little extra....

The gasket is the next expensive at £10-ish

then the rest is pennies
