What is this part?

Can anyone tell me what this part is on the OM648? I have an oil leak and this plastic cover is covered in a thick layer of old oil. I can see more fresh oil on some of the hoses below this part as well.

I couldn't see one at first glance but it's probably under the thick layer of oily mess.

I've been trying to Google what it is but I'll have a proper look tomorrow for the part number after cleaning it.

Isn't that the camshaft position sensor, if so there will be an oil seal around the camshaft which may have failed.

Turns out it's a breather valve/oil separator. It was weeping oil from the o-ring so I cleaned it up and applied a thin bead of RTV to the mating surface.
