Hi guys, can anyone shed some light on what the the grey bit next to the spare wheel hides? This is a 1999 R129 SL320, it sounds like its made of metal and hollow - fuel tank maybe?

Its solid, does not lift up, made of metal. Could it possibly be part of the fuel tank?

As suggested...have you looked from underneath the car?

Its the space for the rear silencer box.
