What made you look to Mercedes? What car or situation..

Working within an Austin Rover, Jaguar LandRover Main Dealer my company cars were from the Austin Rover stable then when I left the company I stuck with Rovers with a couple of Vauxhall’s in between after a very successful time running Rover 75’s we decided to go the car of my dreams, a Jaguar XF.

However after a very acrimonious time with Jaguar Cars and worse with the local Main Dealer I moved to our Mercedes CLS Shooting brake. My son already drove a CLK and it was this car which drew my attention.
Last year I spotted a very low mileage (7600) 2004 350 SL so this replaced our second car so that was the end of a long run with a Rovers.
Never thought I would have a Merc and now I have two, unfortunately due to this Corona Virus issue the SL will have to remain under cover until better days come.

I work in a bodyshop so i`m used to seeing mangled wrecks on a daily basis , there is no other car i would trust as completely as a Mercedes if it all goes wrong and you are involved in a heavy collision ,

on top of that there is still a lot of prestige attached to owning a Merc ,, far superior to a BM or Audi ;)

My late father always aspired to own a Mercedes and sadly never was able to. It was something that always stuck with my as I grew up, even when he was still alive. In my formative years in the 70s & 80s, Mercs were still pretty exclusive and were also perceived to be. I pretty certain dad would have been able to own one these days.

In 1993 I owned an Austin Maestro (what was I thinking? :wallbash:). I came home from work one day and just decided to go and buy a Merc. Most unlike me to be so impetuous and not procrastinate! So off I went to my local MD dealership in Liverpool and bought brand new a C180. Not the best car or best automotive decision I've ever made but for that brief moment as I drove off with 6 miles on the clock....... It took about 10 yards for the word "depreciation" to register!

Was your dad still around to see it , and get a ride in it ? He’d have been proud of you for realising one of his ambitions; we all want more for our children than we do for ourselves.

Even if he wasn’t still around , I’m sure he’d have been looking down and smiling :)

My boss once arrived at work in a Gullwing :)

His daily driver was a 500SL (R129) and his son would drive me to the station in this car once in a while.

I settled for a 10yr old SL500.

have mad many cars over the years from a Mk1 escort through to evos and monster trucks so always had a thing for cars
me i would rather have a 2nd hand car with all the toys than a brand new base model and that has kind of ran with me.
on my 4th Mercedes now
i think my first was a old 300 estate, then a yellow kompressor,
and as you get older me being 50 now you want more quality and comfort as a daily drive and you appreciate what you have although i do have some toys

my current garage consists of
97 Jeep Grand Cherokee
97 Toyota Landcruiser
00 Vauxhall VX220 SC
17 C180 Shooting Brake
11 GL450

I actually didn't set out to buy a Mercedes initially. I got to my early 30s and my preference changed from hot hatches to fancying something more luxury but with a whacking great engine.

My initial thoughts were the BMW V10 M5/M6. Always had a soft spot for the M6, probably since seeing the Top Gear episode where they compared it to a 911 and Aston. The budget was between £15-20k.

Anyway, during my deliberations I was talking to Ed at Divine Detail who's father in law owned a CLS63 which he was looking to sell. Having been looked after by a detailer and having less than 18k on the clock I stretched my budget a little, a deal was struck and I bought it.

Coming from a hot hatch there's various things I've come to appreciate, the comfort, the toys, the build quality and the ease.

Since then my daily car has been an E320 and now an S320. My other half followed suit with an SL350 and now her CLS350!

Always had a soft spot for various Mercs, watching Clarkson talk about his green SL55 and also when the McLaren SLR came out it just seemed perfect.

Well I’ve always had bmw (7series) in the family . So am a big old school bmw fan boy.

But I was looking at a performance saloon as I knew I did not have to use it as a daily driver as I was commuting to work by public transport which I was happy to do and I really liked the e60 m5 but the price of clutch replacement scared me along with the Vanos issues.

So I started looking at MB AMG ‘s then slowly started to like the w211 e63, so did some research and found out the w211 e55 was more my cup of tea as I was reading that the e55 has more low end torque and is better for 0-60, the e63 was more towards top end speeds ( I knew top end speed wasn’t that important to me ( I’m never going to hit that speed on British roads so no need for it) but I am a adrenaline junkee hence a good condition, mileage e55 was purchased.

After 3 years of ownership it is one of the best cars I have driven if not the best. But I am in a predicament as my job has changed and need a daily driver but nothing seems to interest me apart from the 2015 e63 shape.

So would I buy another Mercedes Benz, yes of course. Would I buy another amg? Probably not as I live in London so don’t really use it to it’s full potential ( traffic) & due to needing a daily driver an amg isn’t exactly economical.

Classic 300-SL Gullwing or modern SLS AMG Gullwing? Both incredible machines.

Classic one. Amazing sound

Stunning. What a car. Good for him that he felt able to go to work in it. Many successful people don’t feel able to do such things for fear that their employees or colleagues may take a dislike to them.

Thank you for your kind words. Sadly dad wasn't with us, having passed away in the January of that year. Perhaps my purchase was a reaction in part, maybe also some prompting on his :)

My first Mercedes was a new 508 van in 1973!2009-12-29_311.jpg
It wasn't flash, but simply the best vehicle at the time to get my sound equipment and bands around the UK and Europe.
One American band brought their own big V8 Chevy van over the pond, but it was completely out classed by the Mercedes. You might expect it to have been quicker or more comfortable, but it wasn't and it had to stop 200miles earlier than me to refuel....

I had to wait until the late eighties before I bought my first 'private' Mercedes. It as a lovely black 124 estate. I remember going to pick up the 12 month old car in Slough. It was a former Mars company car. This Mars car certainly helped me to work, rest and play:cool:
It felt incredibly solid and would stay as the family transport for 6 years.

Whilst I was working for Toyota and then VAG it was not seen as politically correct to be driving a Mercedes, and anyway they always provided me with very nice cars.
From 2004 onwards I was paying for my own cars again and so began my sampling of almost the entire Mercedes range for myself and my wife.
It has included: C and E class, (2 x each) SLK, CLS, ML, GLE and S class.
I've always felt comfortable putting my own money into a Mercedes and have been rewarded with great engineering and reliability at reasonable cost.

Of course I've sampled other makes, as at the current time, but still feel comfortable with a Merc.
If Mercedes quality can be judged by the longevity of my 2007 S class car cover, then it's fine.....even if it's not exactly what it says on the cover, it has fitted all the cars I've owned since then.
The current 'long distance' car is currently under wraps, given we are not allowed out:rolleyes:

It was a small family company. He did not drive it very often but when he did you would hear about it (engine)

Almost 25 years ago now. I have not stayed in contact and wonder if he is still driving it now.

I needed a sensible family car after we had a few years of various TVRs so we went off to Car Giant in west London.

After looking at rows and rows of Vauxhall and Ford boxes we figured out we could buy a C Class instead. The rest is history.

Various reasons but one stands out.......560SEC.

Will never buy one but does not stop me drooling.

I grew up in a joint family household. My father (now 70) never could afford a Mercedes and grew up in awe of them. When I move back to the city where they lived, I researched "most reliable Mercedes" and found the W124 was ranked high on that list. I knew that, if I could find a 20 year old example in decent condition, I'd be able to care for it because it was well engineered. I was cautioned by the more experienced members of my family, who had heard that Mercedes Benz cars were money pits. "Not the W124", I always snapped back. Turns out I was right.

I bought the first Mercedes in my family back in 2008. There have been many more purchases since then. I still own the W124 and my father remains in awe.

Went to the local BMW garage looking for 2 x 5 series.

Got ignored, found a salesman but they were all "busy".
Left a card with details that we wanted 2 x new 5 series and was told they would be in touch.
Never did........

Polar opposite with John R Weir at Mercedes, guy turned up with an E after a phone call and took us for a drive.
Come to think of it, wish he hadn't, ended up buying 210s with the M112 V6.
