0W-40 would be better if you can get hold of it, retaining more fluidity when cold and more viscosity when warm

some people would say that car should use 10w40

MB Dealers in the past used Castrol 5W-30 and then Shell Helix Ultra 5W-40 on my 180k, both 229.5 - if this helps you make up your mind.

(I believe that Olly PCS (BlacklC55) used Petronas Syntium 3000 5W-30, though I am not sure)

for the first 3 services that were done by mercedes it says they used mobil , the last one it doesn't say .

it needs a 1 litre top up , is it ok to mix different oils as I've no idea what was put in on the last service and the next ones not for another 6000 miles

Yes, it is OK to mix different oils.

It is generally not recommended but it is better to have two different 229.5 oils then too little oil...

But don't top it up if it's on the Min level, only if under (when hot).

The 0w means its much more fluid, means from cold, the engine is better protected, the 40 means even when hot, the engine is still well lubricated

Car Bibles : The Engine Oil Bible

Mobil1 0W40 is okay, because the '40' denotes that it's actually thick enough at temperature to work. 0W20 just doesn't get that viscous!
