I am in the USA on business this week..

I'll have a fair bit of time on my hands (I dont like to use the term jolly but :bannana: ) so I might visit a few car accesory shops and see what I can pick up for the SClass!

Any advice or experience on what is worth picking up in the US?

Left hand drive parts and incompatible phone kits.

Buy a new car.. :) They have thousands that no one is buying..

find a rust free 350 SDL , lovely car, not much money, diesel or veggie!

Difficult justifying buying any bits you don't actually need -just in case.
Bearing in mind what you said about:- Todo: Driver's heated seat not working, heated door mirrors driving me nuts and a few minor odds and sods! I would investigate whether there's any small components for those problems you might get cheaper over there. Don't know the customs regs about importing new parts for tax implications but perhaps second hand ones would be exempt? If there is a good MB parts specialist where you are going it might be worth making contact/ checking out how reliable their operation is for future use. They are more likely to do business with you in the future if you have established "face to face" contact. With the fall in value of the pound against the dollar plus shipping costs buying bits from the states isn't the bargain it used to be.:(

How about a nice 300SD (W126 Diesel)?

To be more practical, I often buy car polish and wax whilst I'm in the US (its far cheaper when compared to UK prices) and put it in my suitcase.

I bought a remote starting kit a couple of years ago, very good for cold mornings I thought.
It's still in the box unopened, to get it to work you have to disable the immobliser or leave a key in a box under the steering colomn, no good for most cars, especially with KEYLESS-GO.

I thought remote starting kits were illegal in this country?

Don't know, but the insurance will not cover you.

Debatable subject that one, i fit Alarms for a living and these kits are available in the UK. However if you want to go by the law then leaving a car running with no occupants is classed as abandonment so, in theory if someone were to steal your car the insurance wouldn`t have to pay up as you have abandoned the car.

Similar thing with Turbo Timers we fit, same theory applies so we always advise customers before we fit either.

you could go by the dealers and get and American brochure for the S class and an English one when you get back, then when you buy your next car you have all info and spec.

USA - big place so hard to get around. Depending on where exactly you are going, you'll be lucky to take in more than the odd accessory shop. And then you have to hope to find MB related stuff in there.

Enjoy your trip back through customs...:D
