Im looking for some ideas of what to do with my dads old merc, its been sat in my garden for 10 years ( i did have it on the road for a while in 2004) my kids wanted to keep it as it was special to their grandad and they had the idea that they would drive it when they were old enough it but it is so big and the insurance is stupid so its just sat there doing nothing. its a D reg (1987 ?) 230TE. the inside is immaculate.

Sell it for parts?

Does it run?

Is it very rusty?

your easiest bet is just to wack it on ebay. post up some pics here 1st and there will be plenty to inform you of the real value of what you have. if the interior is leather and really is mint etc then it may be worth selling the interior seperatly..... etc etc.

bodywork is good. one bit of rust coming on front wheel arch, and along the edge of the boot. starts first time with jump leads, but smokes a bit.not sure what condition everythng underneath is in as its been standing for so long.did think about donating it to a college or something for kids to work on but cant find one.

whats the spec? mileage?

if it has leather and its really immaculate then lots of people would be interested in the parts i suspect.

Sell it to me and when your kids can afford the insurance they can buy it back, shame to just get rid of something with sentimental value with no prospect of seeing it again.!!

i know, im really torn as to know what is the best thing to do. if i keep it then it is just going to sit and rot, if i sell it i wouldnt want to see anyone else in it but my dad. thinking of taking a few souveniers off for the kids,(hub caps , badge etc ) then scrapping it. so hard to know what to do.:wallbash:

why scrap it? it sounds a well kept example at one point - and someone else could make it their pride and joy.

the W124 is one of the best mercedes ever made - if its a good example with a little TLC then no reason to scrap.

if it was your dad's pride & joy then surely scrapping it is the worst thing you could do - sell it to someone who will make use of it! of course it all depends on the condition.

It may be a cheaper car to run than you think. It would almost certainly qualify for classic car insurance, parts are plentiful, and there is a large network of Mercedes Benz independant garages who could repair and service the car without needing to use the dealer network (who aren't necessarily expensive anyway for older vehicles).

If cared for it will offer many more years of service.

However, it's easy to become overly sentimental about departed relative's possessions. Everyone is different, but speaking from personal experience I always try to imagine what the relative in question would say about holding onto something purely because of a former owner. :)

Cherishing the memory of your Father's car enthusiasm doesn't necessarily mean holding onto his car at all costs.

Best of luck with whatever decision you take.

Why not get a local (trusted) mechanic to come round and give it a once over. All it might need is a simple service, new tyres, etc and you've got a really good daily runner.

As above - with a little TLC you would almost certainly have a distinctive and reliable car which is not only a pleasure to drive but safe to transport your youngsters around in .

Insurance need not be too expensive : I ran two 300 estates in succession and only paid circa £200 for fully comp insurance - as has been said , a limited mileage classic policy would be even cheaper , many others insure simialr cars for £100-£130 ....YOU might even pay less depending on your circumstances !

Otherwise , if you are determined to dispose of the car , get your post count up to 30 and advertise it on HERE with a few photographs - I'm sure you would have buyers queueing up at your door . It really is quite a desirable car .

Good luck .
