What Tyres to use

I have a 1998 W210 with 18" AMG alloys. About 12K ago I had a cheap set of tyres on the rear (about £90 each - 265/35/18) I have got about the mileage I would have expected out of these cheap tyres.

I now need a new pair and was wondering what other members were using on these rims and what they thought of them.

I have Michelin Sports on the front and in the same mileage they look hardly worn.

So the question is; are the more expensive tyres worth it, more performance, miles etc etc??????

you get what you pay for .. I would keep the same tyres all round

The wear factor is not directly proportional to the cost, as it depends on the rubber compound.

A softer compound will be much grippier, but will wear more quickly. (e.g. Goodyear F1s)

My "Budget" Toyos that I had on the previous set of wheels, were a harder compound, and lasted very well !

I would stick to the Michelin sports .. they are well suited to the British weather (good grip in winter months). I have some bad driving habits, and well let me put it this way, they have definetly saved my no claims bonus on two occasions in the last year.

I've got Michelin Sports as well. Great grip in all conditions, even in a downpour. I haven't noticed much wear after 10,000 miles.

Gary , were the mich. sports the tyres that came with the car?

I got continental premium contacts (dont know if they are much good ?)

Seems to feel the bumps a lot ?

Yes Steve, the Michelins came with the car, and I do feel the bumps as well. Its pretty much expected with 17" wheels and avantagarde suspension, but its worth it for the amazing grip! The only thing is that they are more of the more expensive tyres to replace. I recently replaced a 17x8.5 (245/40, I think) for 150 pounds +VAT from the dealers b/c of a puncture.

I don't know much about continental tyres, I always thought they were in the same league as michelins and pirelli, but some members don't like them. Take a look at :

I found the continental contact sports to be a good overall tyre in the 18 inch range. Goodyears and Yoko's are good tires but unfortunately the tread life is not all that. Can't comment on a Michellin as i haven't used them before. It depends what you are using the car for and how you drive it. If you like throwing the car through windy roads you'll be better off going for a Goodyear or Yoko tire as these are slightly softer compound and give that extra grip. If not then you'll be better off sticking with tires that have good thread life and save a few £££s in the long run. On my old E Class i was changing my 18 inch goodyears every 8-9000 miles while with the continentals i was managing 12-13000 miles.

So far on 10.000 km with my Goodyear Eagle F1 (GSD3) - well pleased with that, and they hardly look worn. I think the GSD3 have a better compound that extend thread life, compared to previous F1s.

Excellent in the wet, quiet, grippy, etc.
