What Version of Command & Firmware do I have

Can anybody help please?

How can I tell which command system I have installed in the car. Is there a button push that will bring up firmware and model version?

Nope.

Does the COMAND fill the full width of the centre console, or does the wood/metal trim go around the COMAND

Full width: COMAND NTG2
smaller: COMAND 2.0

In the case of COMAND2.0 you have the latest firmware since last version of firmware was well before 2004.

In the case of COMAND NTG2 the firmware is on the map disk, so you need latest map disk ( Comand Online Ltd :: Mercedes SatNav/COMAND :: Mercedes Navigation Disks :: Comand APS Map DVD Europe 2010/2011 (V12.0) for A,B,W203 C,CLK,ML,R,GL, Sprinter, Viano, Vito ) to get the latest firmware. There is also a module called the AGW in the COMAND NTG2 which can only be firmware updated with the Star Diagnosis computer - there was a firmware release for that in 2006. If the traffic jams are shown on wrong side of the road you need that firmware update.
