2011 S212 E350CDi. 1981 R107 300TurboDiesel.
Pulled up behind a Rav4 stationary at a roundabout. Right hand of two lanes and turning right. Despite there being no traffic from the right side the Rav did not move. A few cars came and went and it still did not move. I tooted. Young woman driver then turned, held up her mobile and mouthed something that looked very like " SHUT-UP, I'M ON THE ----ING PHONE"

imho the present 'points and fine' is insufficient to deter this nonsense.

Derek, as you know we run a motorcycle training school, and most days one of our instructors will talk about an incident during the day caused by someone on the phone.
I really think the authorities need to really clamp down on mobile use whilst driving.
Bluetooth headsets especially are very cheap, so there is no need for it. It is still a mojor cause of accidents.
Your experience is pretty typical of the response that you get if you challenge someone. I never knew that you have chavs in Scotland too! :)

No she hadn't broken down cos the next scenario is that I blew the horn again -properly this time- and she stormed off in a rage.

What perplexes me is some folk seem to think this sort of behavior is not only acceptable but is the norm and shouldn't be complained about.

Ray. I was relating this story to the guys at the woodyard and the driver told me he'd spotted someone just that day munching into a Kentucky Fried Chicken balanced on his knee. This in the fast lane on the M8. :(

 Scary stuff!

Sounds as if she was lost and was call for directions at the next roundabout.
With her charm I'm sure she'll go far in life.

DRUK - completely agree. The penalty is no deterrent obviously or so may would not be doing this still. I'm amazed quite frankly - they also seem to think they are in the right and look at you as if you are mad for complaining.

What beats me is it tends to be the expensive car drivers that still do this. Surely if they can drive around in £50K + cars they can afford £100 for a parrot (no puns required!) or £30 for a bluetooth headset..!!

The other big culprit seems to be females at shops or school runs. If only they realised how dangerous it could be with little johnny n the car as well.!!

The problem is that a £30 non-endorsable penalty is no deterrent.

The only solution is to give the offender a choice and immediately seize either the car or the phone. Obviously they can't be trusted with both!

We have NEDS ( non-educated delinquents ) !

I sympathise and agree with all as above .

I really enjoy tooting at some of them when I'm out in my fire brigade van which is marked up with reflective stripes etc and looks a bit like a police vehicle - the dimwits are usually so engrossed in their conversations that when I toot and they see the markings on the van , they assume it is the police and the phone is dropped along with a look of horror on their faces . Great fun .

If I see someone actually driving dangerously/badly with a phone in their hand , I will phone the police and report it ( using my hands free kit , of course , although an exemption does exist for emergency calls ) I have done this a few times and given VRM , location and description of driver - don't know of any outcome however .

I still don't think £60 and 3 points is enough. When will these folks realise it's cheaper (not to mention safer) to spend less than that on a Bluetooth device and save on points!!

Until the penalty is MUCH harsher this sort of thing will continue.

I for one would be happy to see 6 points and a £500 fine.. Now that might change things a bit. Two strikes and you've lost your license on totting grounds for those who don't learn 1st time.

Harsh I hear you say but it's easy... Don't do it and you don't have to pay.!:thumb:

An automatic 30 day ban would be more likely to deter .

Fortunately its £60 and 3 points.

It could be £1000 and 20 points and it would not make a jot of difference. If its not policed every one ignores the law in exactly the same way as people slow down for a camera and once past resume their 40mph in a 30mph zone.

Being fined for using your mobile while in your car is instant dismissal for Gross Misconduct where I work, if it happens during normal working hours or your commute.

Being obliged to declare the conviction to your insurer and them bumping up your premium because you have demonstrated that you are a greater risk woud be a further deterrent .

Fortunately its £60 and 3 points.

Thanks for that, Swiss Toni!! Shows I'm not as smart as I think I am!

But.... I still think my idea is a better punishment!
