.....if you just found out your car had been clocked? Even though service history, previous MOT certificates etc had pretty much verified the mileage?

Depends on the cicumstances which could range from, for instance:
1. new speedo put in at 62,121 miles and new speedo read 62,000 miles to
2. speedo reading 62,000 miles on a car that's done 250,000 and had a shed load of fraudulent documents manufactured to support it.

1. I wouldn't bother with but 2. I most certainly would 'go to town'.

Sometimes it is best not to know, but if you are asked on selling, choose your words carefully.

Delete this thread so that whoever you sell it to never finds out ;)

With todays electronic mileage displays, is it just as easy to clock a car as it used to be?

No , the mileage is held in a few other places other than just the cluster.

Don't ask me where though ! :o

I heard a story in the 80s of someone who bought an old Alfa convertible, and after a tidy up, decided the a little "haircut" wouldn't go amiss. When he got the speedo out, he found a sticker on the back which read "Oh no, not again."

Ive heard that one too but it was about a Ford Escort. always makes me Laugh :D

Its a tough one, the only thing i can think of is check the history carefully to see if there is any evidence of it having a new unit fitted at some point, I had a heart sinking moment when reading through old invoices for my car but after inquiring at my local main dealer it turned out to be just a typo.

My Smart car was the same. There was something ambiguous reported in the HPI, yet all MoT records showed regular mileage. I never got to the bottom of it. But I still had faith in the car and ultimately sold it to my father. I'd happily buy it back from him if he no longer wanted it. So I guess what I'm saying is, as long as it's reliable to you there's no need to panic.

By how much has it been clocked?
Yours is high mileage anyway, isn't it?

You mean very high mileage surely.

Knowingly selling a car that's clocked is an offence btw - so be careful...

Yes, I am very aware of that which is why I asked the question unfortunately......

Am in a very difficult position as to what to do

Phone olly and ask him where else the mileage is stored .... he'll know.

You can probably pull it off one of the modules with a STAR if you know what you are doing ...

Tried that today, that's how I found out. Reputable Indie (recommended off here as it happens), were really good about and didn't even charge me for their time.

I will email Olly the details anyway just for his information as he has seen the car a few times.

Just not sure where to turn next - the odo still needs changing after I lost 10k when my battery died last year (apparently this is not uncommon on MB's) and with ASSYST having a higher reading, my only option is to go to one of these 'speedo' places that can change the mileage :(

Again , though they will only be able to change the cluster mileage won't they ?

The mileage stored in the other modules ( EIS , DAS etc ) is not changable i think.

Do you mean get the cluster altered upwards to match the other modules mileage ?

How much discrepancy is there ? whats it showing and what has it really done ?
