Just had my wheels refurbished as I had a slow puncture. We dunked it in water and it was slowly leaking round the rim. Its not now but i am still losing pressure so i am getting a new tyre (contisport 5 to match the rest) as it was previously repaired although the repair was not leaking. I can only think it may have leaked when the weight of the car was on it. Anyway a new tyre is the only thing left to change, and i have approx 5mm tread left on both rears. Would you change both so they have matching wear or can i get away with just changing the one?

You sure it's not the valve leaking?
I'd change both tyres and keep the good one as a spare if practical, otherwise sell as part worn..

Second that - I prefer to change both tyres on an axle if I can.
If you’re keeping the same type then it’s useful to have a great condition spare (or as said, could make money back if you wanted to pass it on).

As above. Change both. 5mm is not that far off recommended replacement limit on tread so don’t feel too bad about it.

A new tyre will have about 8mm tread depth, so at 5mm it has about 3mm left before you get near the 1.6mm legal limit. I never run mine lower than a couple of mm.

Definitely not the valve as it was renewed with the wheel refurb. I have taken all of your advice and will order 2 and keep the good 1 for spare.
Thanks for your help :thumb:

Ahh karma...advise you to buy two, go out to the car and checked after a pressure warning and an air top up last night - there’s a split in the sidewall AND staples in the tread :wallbash: think those gave the puncture reading and a lucky spot on the split.
Contrary to what I said I’m trying to get a single matching front ad the other is pretty much brand new lol  guess it’s the situation

Wasn't me. Honest Guvnor :D. If my tyre had been almost new i would have just replaced one but half worn and it could upset things, and thinking about it, as I do a lot of mileage i would probably had to have changed the old one in 2 months time anyway !!

Why would you get your wheel refurbished because you had a puncture?

They may have damaged the bead when refitting the tyre.

They were a bit scabby so needed refurbishing anyway and 3 people plus myself could only find a leak on the bead/rim edge. When the refurb guy took all the tyres off he said they were all covered in sealant so would have leaked at some point anyway. I was hoping i wouldn't need tyres yet as there are a few thousand miles left in them but prepared myself just in case. Took a small gamble and it didn't pay off this time but at least the wheels look good now :D:D

All now sorted. Ended up fitting 2 new tyres as the other one was starting to crack. Now i have nice new rear tyres and shiny silver wheels.

Who did you use to refurbish your wheels?

I've just had all four alloys refinished on my 2009 E class.
Alloy wheels look good and are light - But my experience of them on aging cars has not been so good.
Fortunately - All my problems of loosing air pressure are cured .......... For now.
