My wifes friend has a 2000 Vreg petrol A class semi-auto (no more info other than "its nice"), the ecu failed so shes had it stood on her drive for a few months, now the test has run out shes asked me if I want to buy it

Is it worth buying and what type of money should I offer ?

Phil

Well, I got £1600 px for a V reg A160 from a MB dealer last year... and it was in perfect working order with full mot...

I'd start at £50.....

.

Sure it is the ECU that has failed, some places diagnose this because they can not find another fault. Might be worth buying it very cheaply ie so cheap that you could break it for parts and recover your money then see if you can fix it yourself; ECUs can be repaired as well. £400?

The semi-automatic boxes are also notorious and disliked by the trade so tread carefully! In this car the ECU and MAFF are a combined unit. Some firms now offer to repair the MAF bit provided the ECU is OK. see LOFTY'S page here. http://www.aclassinfo.co.uk/mypage.38.htm

If they give you about 500 quid on top of it, you might want to consider taking it off them .

Could it be worse than the ECU? its looking like this isnt worth buying at any price

If you can get it for £500 or less you're on to a winner, as it will break all day long for a grand plus.

Rip the guts out and convert it to electric. The sandwitch floor was designed for battery storage.

Ahem actualy, I was wondering how much to pay as a second car rather than breaking or eco friendly conversions

The problem with buying non runners is that its difficult to assess the rest of car because of one "known" fault. My guess would be that there may be a problem with the drive train which you won't find until you get the car running with a repaired MAF/ECU unit. People don't usually put a car off the road for just one fault even its expensive to repair.

It drives fine the problem is only staling at corners/low revs her garage said it was the ecu and would cost £550 to fix

I am very interested in it as I need a courtesy car/van

Could be worse..........

Could be a Ripoff
