What's Everyone Watching on TV

I’ve been watching “Mozart: Rise of a Genius” on BBC Two on Monday nights. Fascinating and well produced.

Last episode tonight, immediately after my weekly dose of challenging quizzes (one whilst lusting after Victoria.)

Just started watching Ludwig. It's clearly made for old farts, so it fits like a glove - I really like it.
Dang, so do I.

It is a ridiculous rip off from Professor T, predictable in that formulaic Death in Paradise kind of way,

but "goes down well with a cup of tea and a biscuit." (To quote King Kermode)

Not to be confused with the original Belgian "Professor T," which is good but foreign, or the American remake which is rubbish.

David Mitchel is very underrated. It’s excellent. 👌
I think he's be's best on WILTY (Would I Lie To You). I love his rants. He's also a good author - I recently read his excellent Unruly - A history of England's Kings and Queens, which was educational and funny at the same time. Anyway, also a Ludwig fan here.

(Why do so many people miss an 'L' off the end of common names? My mum was a Mitchell and I have the same surname as a famous syco who's the lead judge on several TV talent shows, but we're regularly condemned to a solo L at the end of our names. Is it so that Welsh speakers don't rupture their tongues trying to pronounce the double L?)

Taking the Mick ?

It "should" be a single "l" because its root is from "Michael" or "Michel" (Norman or Celt)

But by far the common use is two l's .....

(The fascinating thing about David Mitchell is the story of how he "clicked" with Victoria Coren-Mitchell within hours of meeting her. Phew !!)

My favourite rants of his are the many aimed at the very awesome Bob Mortimer. David always seems to get Bobs claims of such bizarre experiences wrong. Fabulous entertainment. 🥳

Bobs habit of doing his own DIY dental work was my favourite!!

Recently (binge) watched:
  • The Tower, Series 3: Enjoyed a good suspense drama (as I had the previous two series)
  • Ludwig: Agree with the comments about it being predictable and formulaic and a pastiche of Professor T, but it was also watchable, amusing, entertainment without a tediously unnecessary "social message"
  • Why Didn't They Ask Evans?: Hugh Laurie's 2022 adaptation of the Agatha Christie novel was an enjoyable, well shot, watchable whodunnit. The plot wasn't totally coherent, but the acting and characterisation was good and the injection of humour made what could have been a straightforward period piece fun. It also featured a rather gorgeous Lagonda LG45 pillarless saloon
Also watch the last ever Grand Tour episode which was entertainingly stupid but also poignant. Great TV.

Just to add...

There was a short (30mins) show on BBC4 yesterday evening with Philip Glenister (Gene Hunt) and Matthew Graham (co-creator of Life on Mars) chatting about how the idea for the series came about together with a few anecdotes about the characterisation of Gene Hunt. Worth a watch on iPlayer if you were or are a fan of the series which, incredibly, was first broadcast 18 years ago in 2006.

Watching episode 2 of Ludwig last night, I realised that I was slow on the uptake. All the music is heavily influenced by Beethoven’s work. Trying to determine which piece influenced each smattering of background music distracted me from the plot
