Hello. I wanted to know whats the best obd or obd2 reader for my w211 e220 cdi 2005 model on ebay. I know I will probably be criticised for buying from ebay but if you can tell me which one would be best to give me error codes of different sorts.
Also does my car take obd or obd2 reader? Thanks

obd readers are ok as a pointer to fault conditions or to "turn-off" lamps. In some cases lamp will come on again and again - in which case "STAR" will have to be run which costs around £60 or so at a good Indie. Main dealers charge a lot more I believe. I wouldnt pay more than £30 for an obd reader

Your car will have ODB2 what is it you are looking to do, how much do you want to spend?
Nothing wrong with ebay :thumb:

I paid not a lot for a U480. Has done everything I need so far on my W211, son's W203 and d-in-law's W210 (with adapter, extra). Doesn't reset the ECU, but I'm not sure how useful or effective that would be with affordable units.

I had a U581 reader which worked well on some cars, but not others (about £60 on Ebay I think). Don't know about Merc. I recently bought a bluetooth dongle Mini ELM327 Car Bluetooth V1.5 OBDII on ebay - about £7 from China. It works very well with my android and the free version of Torque. I have only tried it out, not yet used it for diagnosis of a particular problem but it seems to work well on the Toyota and VW I have tried so far. For what it costs is probably worth a go.

I have an Autel MaxiDiag handheld unit that can read and reset both generic ODB2 codes as well as some MB-specific ones (ABS/ESP, SRS/Airbags). Of course it is not STAR, but for the price...

In addition I recently purchased this item:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00CP3L9PA/?tag=amazon0e9db-21

Which I just leave plugged into the ODB port and can access it from my mobile whenever I want using an App called Torque Pro:

http://torque-bhp.com/

I highly recommend this unit - it only reads generic ODB2 codes obviously, buy it is extremely reliable and easy to use, and only costs a tenner...

In addition Nick from NJ Diagnostic - the seller - was extremely helpful and emailed me offering technical support - which in the event I did not need - which was reassuring and not something you would normally expect from an Amazon seller.

Best tenner I've spent in a long time...
