The post '97 has fully painted bumpers with little lip spoilers on and also a small spoiler as part of the bootlid at the rear edge.
The pre '97 has black strips on the lower bumpers and a plainer boot lid.
There are a number of other differences but this is the quick way to tell.

If you have a 4 speed then there is a dipstick at the rear of the engine bay, if you have a 5 speed there is no stick in the tube. if it's a five you can buy a service dipstick. Search the forum for the part number it's been covered several times.
The differences:
-Side repeators, smoother on Facelift
-Rear light clusters, Darker on Facelift
-High level brake light with ether bulb/LED's
-Front and back bumpers have 'lips' on Facelift
-Body coloured side skirts on Facelift
-No ariel on Facelift, the car itself is one
-Bootlid has 2 horizontal lines above and below the numberplate from rear cluster to cluster, plus a small 'lip' on top.
-Numberplates are on 'plaques' instead of the bodywork
-Front Grill has black holes on facelift, grey on Pre-Facelift
