whats the league table re Mercs

Some people are quite happy with their Ford Fiesta, others are happy with their S204, but some have been enlightened.

My understanding:
Smart - Smallest of the family. City runabout
A-Class - One bigger, hot hatchback for those looking for a little luxury over a fiesta
C-Class - Aimed at middle management.
E-Class - Aimed at families (estate) or taxis (saloon)
G-Class - Aimed at rough terrain, offroading, and most potholes in the UK.
M/ML - SUV, aimed at the soccer mom. Useless off road, but spectacular in an accident against a volvo (from personal experience)
R - minibus type thing for people who can't see how ugly it is (sorry :p)
S-Class - Luxury car, aimed at limos, royalty, VIPs, etc. Included S-Guard (bulletproof) models used frequently by presidents, prime ministers and despots

Then you have the variations with L's and LK's for those who want something sportier.

The second part is a number, loosely related to the engine size (e.g. 180, 200, etc. 180 is usually 1.8litrel 200 2.0litre and so forth. This isn't always the case). Also, if it's modified by AMG, they'll drop to 2-digit numbers, e.g. 43 instead of 430, etc)

(there are excpetions - like the viano, which I see aimed a tthe commercial market)
M.

EDIT: Forgot to say, they are different cars for different uses/markets. Each one is "better" in it's target market. As much as I love my S-class, I would prefer to drive the smart into central london. Similarly, I wouldn't drive the smart off-road (but I am considering it :p)

where would you fit the proper cars like W123, W124 and particularly 190E's
in this league table?

I guess you could just order the list by price ... list price of the cheapest version of each model? Presumably that would put the SLS at the top, and the G Class not far off!

I would say both the S and CL are at the top of the list.

Both showcase the ultimate in performance and power but also the height of luxury, gadgets and safety for 'ordinary' cars in the future.

The CLS was designed for people who don't like Mercs so should be in it's own list somewhere left of centre...or right if that's the way you prefer it.

thats a given ! the 190 always gets the garage :D

.....to protect it from disintegrating :D

Can we include the McMerc aka SLR?

No, it's out of production

Presumably that would put the SLS at the top,

The most sensible and accurate post in this thread. SuperLight....Sports? Obviously, the name alone (assuming I got it right) means it's best ;)

Come on Andrew?! You know the CLK was the original sports grand tourer! So this is the original modern day MB signature which has gone on in leaps and bounds. Case closed. CLK top of the ladder.:D

It has to be by class, otherwise it is impossible to work it out.

Is a high-spec C with leather, COMAND, Bi-Xenon, Pano, and a nice V6 'better' than an entry-level taxi-spec E200K..?

Why? A C63 (for example) is still 'only' a C Class

True but it's the pinnacle of the C class :dk:
