Hello ladies and gentlemen. This beast was powering towards La Manche today, with a very loud, yet pleasing, sounding engine. I was thrilled that it might be an old Bentley in British racing green, the one car I've had a long obsession for, ever since reading of James Bond (maybe Moonraker?) barrelling along country roads in one at 90. Couldn't tell even the marque as I went past, as I was focused on getting a decent picture (as I knew I'd be asking on here!), beep, get the window down to give them a friendly wave and staying safe. Bet those two were pretty cold, despite being well wrapped up!

Hoping someone can clear up what the car is, but I'm guessing it is at the very least British and hopefully pre-War.

Almost certainly a pre-war Bentley in Le Mans bodywork. Googling the number plate it's a 1929 Bentley 6 1/2 litre. It would appear originally to have been a Weymann (fabric) bodied saloon, converted to Le Mans VDP style bodywork at a later date.

Looks very small compared to pre war Bentleys I've seen in the metal ?

Ah, grand, I'm so glad it was a pre-war Bentley! Thank you. Very interesting info too. Just curious, did you recognise the car before looking up the plate?

Could that just be the camera angle? :dk:[/QUOTE]I think so. It was pretty big as I went by! Also I'm tall in a biggish car, for the perspective and my phone (Moto G 1st gen) makes everything seen miles away!

The car had real presence. Those long bonnets always make me think of an aircraft engine squeezed in there

Here's a nice article about James Bond and his first car, a Bentley like this!

And it was Casino Royale - a heck of a good read that I can thoroughly recommend, echos of the style of 39 Steps...

Years ago I organised a car club at my school and persuaded the Bentley Owners Club to give a talk - and they turned up with 3 cars, all 1930 or earlier. IIRC they were a 3L, a 4 1/2L non supercharged, and a Speed 6. As a passenger in one of them with the other 2 in convoy behind, from Sidcup to Chislehurst, was an experience I will never forget, especially when a mini tried to "traffic lights grand prix" the 3 away from the lights and got obliterated by about 7 tons of green machinery!!

Wonderful picture quality of the cars in that video. And astonishing how big the Bentley is going past a competitor. Took me a couple of goes to correctly screenshot it on my phone....

The problem with these old Bentley's is that so many were raced, wrecked, chopped about, re-bodied and re- built.

Not to mention the 1970's/1980's fad for building 'replicars' using parts from rusty 1950's Bentley saloons , and indeed there were kits for doing this .

The resulting cars were vaguely similar in style to the real thing , but on a smaller scale . Proper ' W.O ' Bentleys are huge things , not just in length , but in height they tower above modern cars .

It may have been the picture , but that one just looked too small to me ...

Last summer two of these Brookland Bentlys came through Bewdley with two beautiful blond girls driving one each . Their hair was blowing about in the summer wnd .A picture to remember ..

Which is why Ettore Bugatti described Bentley as the manufacturer of the world's fastest trucks!

This will be an unpopular opinion
