Of course, without wishing to be rude, we have discussed this before.

It's not Irish. It is a UK plate. The UK has two constituent parts: GB and NI. The above plate is from NI, therefore is Uk.

An Irish plate ( ie from the Republic of Ireland ) has the year, then the county, then the number, on a white background front and rear. For example: 99 D 21009 Is a car registered in Dublin for the first time in 1999. You will notice it can have more than 4 numbers in a row, according to the number of cars being registered in a particular year. The year ( logically ) runs from Jan 1st to December 31st. Simple, yes?

Also when we buy a car over here the plates are just as cheap as they are over there.

Simples ....

( i know it's a pet hate of yours ;) )

But the plates on the car were not issued on the mainland , but on that strange island off the coast of Wales that is known as Ireland , whether Northern or Southern , it is still Ireland , hence an Irish plate ....

Here's another one ....

;) Just kidding !!

Howard, I am getting used to your ways. I don't really mind my friend, just like a little rant now and again.
I suppose if I lived on the Isle of Wight I might refer to GB as the mainland, but I don't, I live on mainland NI, you live on mainland GB, yes? I remember landing in Belfast one time and the stewardess said the weather was much the same as in the "UK", not the "rest of the UK". Do you wonder we can get a little paranoid?

so what is the euro marker for NI? is it GB as UK is illegal

You are right, it is GB. Though a few people use NI. But this is entirely wrong since NI is allocated to another country, Nicaragua. We can also use IRL ( a dispensation ) and sometimes this can be a prudent move.
