Hi all,
Had four new tyres fitted and was given free alignment check, they said it needed doing so I paid them. After that the steering wheel was about 30 degrees off centre so I took it back and they done it again, this time 30 degrees the opposite way and the steering shakes at 70 mph.
To cut a long story short Ive had it done three times and no one can get it right!! I know whats involved so I know its not difficult, if I had the kit I'd do it myself. Ive adjusted each track rod by small precise (and equal) amounts to get the steering wheel back on centre but now I need a competent mechanic to carry out the final alignment. I dont mind paying good money but not the £260 Mercedes want.

BTW, the three shops all blamed it on Mercs, 'Its cos its a steering box mate, if it was a rack it'd be a piece of P***

The cars a 1999 C250 RB.

The RB is for Rust Bucket :)

Err..quality quote....

You need a four wheel alignment as it could be the rears are out, but obviously need a better outfit than ones you have used so far.

Oops...sorry,
It was a four wheel alignment. The car has never been kerbed or in an accident, I had it MOT'd hence the new tyres, and the tester said the same, additionaly he said only a main dealer has the kit and the correct training to align the wheels where a steering box is present. I find that difficult to believe.

Try BMTR in Perry Barr. Never used them for four-wheel alignment, but they do them, and the service was excellent when I've bought tyres there in the past.

we can do it for you if you wish... i think they charge about £40 for a 4 wheel align..

Thanks both, Mercland is just down the road from me so I'll be making my way there in the next couple of days.

Its actually my dads garage on site... but i use them for all my work and their alignment has never let me down..
you can book on 024 76386327 option 2...

Had my SLK done by BMTR today. Had the full 4 wheel align/caster/camber check. It took an hour and cost £94 inc vat. Now the car doesn't pull to the left and feels like a different car. Think the Guy i bought it off had had it done by quickfit before i picked it up but it was still pants. Guys at BMTR went through the printouts with me and explained everything.
Very pleased would definitely recommend if your in the area. Top :bannana:

I require exactly the same service and the fitting of two tyres (which I already have) to my 9" rear AMG alloys. I am also in the Tamworth area but £94 sounds a bit steep.......Mercland sound like a good alternative at that price....and the added advantage of being "Merc" people.

Hi Sidmon

It was more than just wheel alignment it was a whole geometry check. the SLK went through the same process as they set up there race cars. (lots of stuff about pre loading, cambers and toe ins and thrust angles non of which i understand lol) They also go through the computer printouts at the end. But you pays yer money etc. would be interested in how you get on as a comparison as I've been thinking of Mercland for the SLK's next service as there close to work

IIRC BMTR won't fit tyres they haven't supplied.

I asked Mercland for a quote and was told someone would call me back with a price. Two hours later I called again and asked about my quote again and was told the person who does the alignment side was ill and would be back from the Doctors in half an hour but would call me back.....alas I never got the call and ended up getting the tyres fitted locally (B.Dazzler was right, BMTR don't fit tyres unless they supply). I left the alignment in the end as it seems only a few places can do the "proper" alightment....i.e. rear as well as front adjustment as you need new rear alignment bolts. I'll sort out when I'm back off holiday.

Hi Sidmon,

I must apologise as I had no idea that no one called you back. I dont actually deal with the workshop side, its a seperate business - Whittleford Auto Services and my dad runs that... has done for 28 years.

For future reference my direct mobile number is 07716 349949.

thanks

Jay

I've used BMTR for a Road Force Balance, and I've never had my wheels balanced so well, ever.

Are you guys who have had the 4 wheel alignment done therre happy with it? If so, I think I'll see if they pick up on any other problems if I book in.

Are the tyre prices there reasonable? I'm due at least 2 quite soon, and fancy the new Goodyear Asymetrics.

I've found BMTR to be competitive on price in the past, although the I was in the market for 6 tyres last month, and they didn't want to give me an extra discount, so I went elsewhere.

Jay,

Thanks for getting back. I am in the motor trade myself but I have been using this Merc as my own personal car for almost a year now, and like using specialists. Can you confirm whether the workshop is able to do a complete geometry check and therefore rear adjustment as well, as I know it is quite specialised.

To be honest, this would be the first full 4 wheel trak on a W203 they would be doing. They have done lots of W202's and older...

As you obviously want it done perfectly I would say use BMTR on this occasion as I would not like to let you down if it wasnt spot on.

We can help with tyre swap if you would like us to do that.

if your in the trade use chemix in stourbridge, they charge us £35 + vat, for a full set like bmtr do, complete with printouts etc afterwards

Sorry to dig up an old thread but I'm looking for a set of 4 tyres fitting to a Peugeot I'm currently running around in, your fairly local to me Jaymanek and the guy I always use in Tamworth for tyre fitting (on smaller tyres) has retired!

no worries, you can get me on our number.. look on my website www.mercland.com
