Wheel Bolt Length for 18" AMG wheels on W202

Can anyone tell me what length wheel bolts I would need in order fit a set of staggered 18 inch AMG wheels to a W202. The standard bolts are 12x1.5 radius 40mm and they are too long, about 6mm to long.

I bought some 30mm long ones as i couldn't find 35mm long ones and they seem too short, 3.5 turns and its tight, I dont feel this is safe.

Now, i found a place which sells 35mm long bolts but I just want to double check to see if this fits perfectly.

So what are the correct length Bolts I should be using?

Also, It's going on a elegance, therefore I think there's quite a bit of clearance in the arches, Should I lower it or not? if so, which coil springs are best for looks without giving a ride too harsh?

Are the wheels genuine AMG? Do they have a part number on the inside?

If they are genuine then you most likely do need the 40mm thread length!

Yes, they are genuine wheels, its just that it gets really tight after about 3 spins on the 40 mm bolts and the wheel still wobbles therefore the seat of the bolt isn't on the wheel close enough.

When you put the wheel bolt through the wheel, how much thread is visible from the inner side of the wheel? Should be approx 25mm.

Yes lower it - Bilstien B12 is highly rated, or std sport setup.

There are a couple Elegances around by me with 17/18in wheels on and they look silly (particulary the 18in - looks like it's on stilts - there is also one with sport 16in alloys and that still looks odd).

Puzzled by that - tight after three turns but the wheel wobbles - which suggests bolt needs to go in futher? Is the wheel sitting on the centre of the hub properly?

The bolts definitely needs to go in further, but its really tight to a point im scared of breaking the thread if i overtighten.

Not sure what to do to be honest, I been jacking my car up and down on my drive and measuring with a tape. I tried screwing the bolt on straight onto the hub without the wheel and i can see how far it goes then it stops. Do people usually use the normal 40mm bolts then? might phone up the merc specialist which i had it serviced.

So does it go the same (3 turns) without the wheel?

New bolts are the same thread pitch aren't they? If the 40mm ones will go in futher without the wheel that's all it really could be (would be a marginal dofference if they could make 3 turns though).

Is the bit of the bolt protruding from the back of the wheel all threaded or is part of it unthreaded? If there is any unthreaded bolt protruding from the back of the wheel you have the wrong bolts

If the protruding part is all threaded, and it won't tighten up, then you either have the wrong bolt size or the hub bolt hole has corrosion in it and the bolt won't tighten

There is definitely thread showing when i put the 40mm bolt through the wheel, infact there is more thread showing compared to the standard 15 inch wheel.

Bolt hole must be rusted.

if you are using the same bolts and both sets of wheels are genuine and the 15" wheels tighten up perfectly then you have problems. (i note you say the wheel bolts have more thread showing that the 15" wheels)

You need to check the part number on the inside of one of the wheels and check how much thread comes through the wheel. No amount of speculation is going to cure these issues.

Once we have established that you have the right wheels and the right bolts then we can help troubleshoot further problems.

I just dug up a old thread by SGTBOB

http://www.mbclub.co.uk/forums/wheels-tyres/64250-will-these-amgs-fit-ok.html

My wheels are exactly the same as the ones he is on about, same part number too. only difference are the tyres i got are 225/40/18 front and 255/35/18 rears.

Looking at alloywheelsdirect.com, they should fit and some people on the post above say they fit.

i will have another go at it tomorrow.
