Wheel downsizing E400d AMG Line Night Edition 4Matic

These are definitely meatier than the AMG 20"

And I need them to go!

Hi all, my first post - I've got an AMG E400D and suffered 3 cracked rims in the last 12 months on my 20" wheels. I think 18" is the way to go if possible so has anyone had any success here?

We were in France recently and had a taxi running 18" rims on his E300 so I guess my query is how to compare the disc size, any suggestions on where I could find this info.

With my BMW I could use www.realoem.com to compare parts and models so does Mercedes have a similar site?

TIA

Realoem actually points you in the right direction on the landing page, but here's the link
Mercedes > Mercedes EPC Online > nemigaparts.com

Slight thread drift, but whilst we have chunky 225/55/19s on the X Trail, I did have to have front suspension work at this year's service as the missus believes that her car is invincible to speed bumps and potholes.....

So even with decent depth tyres, a car can still take damage from the roads

Barry.
To be honest 18s would be lost on that car. If you have to reduce the size, 19s are a good compromise. 🙂👍

Thanks, I didn't realise that :(

I agree but think I've got the hang of missing the majority of potholes so hope moving to 18"s helps that extra bit :)

I get what you're saying but the E300 we saw in France looked ok with the 18s on it, I didn't buy the car for its looks, I bought it for it's funcionality and I think 18s will enhance it's usability for me at least.

Fair enough. 🙂👍

E400d All Road owner. Have had two cracked rims one of which has been repaired twice and now a third has two cracks.
20 inch rims with 40 profile on the front and 30 on the rear, OEM sizes.
Bought a friends E63 19s with winters and the fronts fouled the calipers. The 63 calipers are bigger 6 pots but cover more of the disc whereas the e400 calipers protrude more. Started looking at spacers then had a reality check.
Thus it’s 20s or nothing and the car is eating tyres and cracking rims every other month. Sadly this will be the reason I exit this terrific car.

OK, so I should come clean here and admit I posted on behalf of my very analogue bother-in-law as he has no idea about forums or online help!

The good news is his friendly MB parts manager came to the rescue and specc'ed some 18" MB rims, he even checked with the factory to ensure they would fit over the calipers!

His AMG E400 is now running on 18" rims fitted at a cost of around £4k but he's very happy with the change. He doesn't think there's a huge difference in comfort whist driving but you can see the extra tyre wall if you look which I'm sure will help some with potholes.

I've attached details of the wheels but if anyone else thinks about going this route I'd suggest you use this info as a starting point only.

regards

Glad your, Brother-in-law is happy with his new wheels. BUT 4 grand! Jesus! 🤪

He loves the car but was at his wits end and selling it and buying something else would likely have cost more than £4k!

Agree, on that point. But I'm sure he could have got a very similar set of 18" alloys, for a LOT less than, that. But if he's happy. 🙂👍
