I've been watching more of the old series lately.

Since reading about production crew posing as buyers etc. I like the show a lot less now, think I just watch to moan now. ;)
Also I search the cars current status (tax/mot) from the old show I'm watching and amazed at how many are no longer on the road.
For me the sprucing up (mods.) of cars etc. is a bit pointless if it will fall to bits within a few years.

They should drop the thing about selling "at a profit" as that is just nonsense.
I also understand that some of the cars from the old show never sold anyway.

Watched a US show the other night where I guy was paying up to $75k to have a Mustang (think it was) fully restored that would only be worth $25k at today's value.
He was happy to do it as it was all for the sentiment value he had in the car.

I liked the original concept of the show where it was all about how to keep a car on the road as a home mechanic, with lots of tips from Edd, which was originally why the labour was never mentioned as it was squarely aimed at the DIY person. After the first few series though, it started getting silly with sponsorship rearing it's head in the form of tools which no home mechanic could afford and non-cost effective repairs. This was still acceptable I suppose as it was explained that most of the specialist equipment could be hired.

We then started getting the American influence, with Mike importing cars from the US for Edd to work on, import fees were mentioned briefly but not the hassle of registration and the limited market for US cars in the UK. I must admit to liking a few of these programmes, though mainly the affordable stuff like the Charger and Chevy pick-up. Then they moved to the States and that, at least to me, was where it lost it's way. The first car they did was an AMC Pacer which, let's face it, even in it's day was never a desirable car. We then got into the realms of fantasy (AMG replica anyone?) and the programme lost all it's appeal in my eyes.

I'll watch the new series as I like Ant as a presenter and know he's good at what he does, though will be wondering how long he'll last with Mike's ego.

Strictly "Daytime TV." Do some research, negotiate hard, give it a wash, and fix some faults, and everyone can trade car. Meanwhile, in the real world, people enjoy looking at cars but hate selling them.

Just the Engineering equivalent of the Antiques Roadshow.

I tend to watch shows with the cars I like.. So, the Subaru, Bentley, 993 and the Boxster.. I agree, the later shows are very unrealistic as the labour costs are massive.. However the early shows, 924, 205 Peugeot, Golf GTI, etc were very good....

I like it. I don't analyse it too deeply but I am aware that most of what Edd did in the later series needed a fully-equipped garage and specialist knowledge.

The early series are much better for handy tips.

We've been looking at these cars. They seem like a bargain at an average of 30 large in comparison to a Sierra Cosworth at a shed load more.
On EBay there is an Escort RS Turbo for £29,000.

Edd is a gent, Mike is a PITA.

If I ignore the obviously contrived "dealings" and just enjoy the actual repair process and model background aspects then I'm happy to watch. I like the more upmarket stuff like MB, Bentley, BMW etc.

If only Mike would stop b*&^y shaking hands with everyone every 10 seconds!! Would happily miss the whole 'set-up' finding/testing/buying and just go straight to Ed and his work. Agree with comment about labour rates (or lack of). Sometimes note given of X hundred hours of Ed's time, but no cash value (or cost) attributed to this. I'd actually value a list of the suppliers/craftsmen they take their bits and pieces to for specialist work. Some are really worth finding.

The only thing that winds me up about the show is after Ed has replaced the clutch, fitted new shocks and springs, rebuilt the carbs, new exhaust and rebuilt the diff, Mike wades in screaming, "Ed, what do you think you're playing at, you haven't done anything, the car looks the same".
What does he expect it to look like?, Batmobile?. I know it's scripted and's just part of the show, but it still annoys me.

Just a reminder this is airing on Monday.

The US have had this aired a couple of months ago (Grrr) so the episodes can be viewed in the usual places.

I have seen the first 8 episodes and they are still good - I won't give any spoilers however they are better than I thought without Edd.

Few observations

1. They have listened to some feedback and Mike is keeping his hands off the mechanical side. This is good as he was slowly doing little bits towards the end of the last series.

2. Ant is good and I quite like him. Plenty of fabrication from him which is good.

3. No orange gloves, in fact none at all which surprised in today's Elf and Safety PC climate

Set your reminders!

what ever happened to Eddie China?
why did he leave the show?
did he have a fall out with Miki boy about certain things?

Wheelie Dealie should specialize in buying only hot exotic cars, not cars like Hondae Civic or AMC Pacer crap!
show is no fun to watch with these average Joe cars.

good episodes where when they bought the Skyline, 500 SEC, Vette, Camaro, Firebird, Charger etc. etc.
