Where do i get an sls serviced

I recently got quoted £842 for a B5 service for my ML350 from MB Teesside!
To say I was shocked was an understatement! It's not that I couldn't afford it, I just didn't think an oil change, a few filters changed and a load of checks was justified at that price!
My Indy did it for a reasonable £460, which I thought was a fair price for someone running a small independent business.

I agree, but saying things like: "surely £800 isn't a problem?" :dk:

we shouldn't assume because the OP runs this car that £800 isn't a problem. None of us know details of each other's financial circumstances.

^^^^was the point I was making. :thumb:
Unfortunately Ant , when you do drive cars such as these, people automatically assume you are minted hence some of the comments.

It is one the most expensive and rare modern Mercs. it's "originality" is crucial for the SLS guaranteed future high value.

And most were simply saying not having full MBSH is likely to damage resale value.

He has a car with doors that go upwards, course he can do the £800 no problem! Lol :thumb:

With the greatest of respect saving a few bob on an SLS is the daftest request I've heard.

The resale will likely be affected more!

LOL...a rare occasion Stu...but I agree with you.
.

Blimey, the OP was only asking if anyone knew of anywhere to save a few quid!

Just because he can afford the car doesn't mean he has to pay out willy nilly for everything. Give him a break, he didn't say he couldn't afford the service, merely asking if there was any cheaper option.

I have to say Ant I semi agree with this. I used to own a C63 which isn't cheap by any means to run yet I survived off my giro cheque. :D

Saving a few quid in these circumstances is going to an Indy which for this particular car is a no go.

Why?

Do you think people who own W198 300 SLs still take them to the dealership?

No, they'd take it to a specialist costing many times more....

I see SLSes at the indy I use, all the info required to work on them is on Star or WIS or available.

So replace oil and brake fluid, new oil and air filters, new wiper blades. Plus a load of visual checks.

It's a pretty basic car service these guys are performing, not a miracle or magic.

Okay look at it from a different perspective

You're spending an insane amount of saved hard earned cash on an SLS, you're trawling through the paperwork. MB, MB, MB, hmmm looking good... MB, wait, what's this? *checks car vehicle check again* what! Checks tyres on car, again, checks the wear on seats, looks through paperwork again trying to find something else, the mind niggles, the money you've saved is pictured in the back of your head... Do I, don't I, hmm... In fact, nah. Shakes sellers hands and moves on, the search continues

Not saying that's how we all approach buying a car, but I'm sure this will put off 1 out of 3 buyers

Personally, throw it on a service plan. We can all afford to service our cars but thirty odd quid a month suits me better than spending a big chunk at once, that's what insurance is paid with!

Watch out, Stu's got a semi;):D

Actually, I tend to regard proof of servicing at an indy I recognize as a major plus over MB dealer servicing. I've bought cars with FMBDSH only to find they still have the original (or at least very, very old) fuel, cabin & air filters in place. IME dealers do the minimum (while charging the max) they can get away with whereas indys do more.

An indy is usually owned & run by a bloke who has built it up from nothing, is jealous of his reputation & who has a very keen interest in keeping his customers happy.

Two biggest myths to grace the used car market:

Low Mileage
Short journeys and/or sporadic use are far worse than a car which has wear from being used every day for long journeys. Correct Fuels and Oils have additives that are designed to almost 'maintain' and/or treat the passages they pass through as much as their primary function. A car that does 50 miles a month will no doubt suffer from perished rubber more than one that does 5k a month. An engine that never gets warm from short infrequent journeys will never have the oil circulated and filtered as intended. The only good thing about low mileage is, for the most part, the aesthetics.

Full Dealer Service History
Besides the oil and filters, full dealer service history means naff all. I see plenty pass through my place of work, most of them flat refuse to have wiper blades (for the same cost as halfords), brakes until they are metal on metal, tyres until the canvas is showing, or essential other engine parts advised to them - they'd rather push it to the limit or bodge it themselves. Or have the engine light reset as it fixes it for a couple of weeks at a time. They all get a stamp in the book, but are actually poorly maintained as the dealer can only control the items on the service itself.

Very true, WE know the reputable ones are good, like Parkhams (my local) for instance, if I saw paperwork full of work by them I'd be happy

It's just future buyers and the such, even when it comes to buying another and trading in with MB I know they'd be picky about it :thumb:

Do not misunderstand me here.

My Indy could service an SLS with his eyes shut. He does a lot of work on all our family cars from a new Conti to the E and CLS 63 right down to the VW vans.

An official stamp in the service log for one of these cars actually makes a difference to its value. If you don't agree call a few top end dealers , Amari, Hartley ,Barons etc.

They know that a full Merc service history greatly affects the value on these cars and I'd say at least 50% of the cost will be down to that.
