It's interesting because when I traded my C63 the last 3 visits were MSL. Mercedes Birmingham were not bothered and would retail the car with MB warranty. They told me this because I asked them!

So it can't be much of an issue but if I were spending £150k on an SLS I would want the proper MB history.

Stu, they wouldn't retail your car with MSL in the service book and won't give it a warranty either. Your car went to auction or a specialist garage.

I never ended up trading it to them it's just what they said. They offered seriously strong on it too.

Ive just rang Merc for my SLS service and they want £800.

any one know another place in the north west that can do it cheaper ?

I do not know the answer to the question but I do know that the Indie I use, Star Motor Service at Caversham, would look after your SLS as well if not better than a main dealer for less money.
It is nonsense to suggest that a good dedicated MB indie with full diagnostic capability could not look after an SLS.

You do not say where you are nor how old is the car nor how long you intend keeping the car.

If it were me distance would be no object in travelling to a good well respected indie with whom you can build a relationship. As soon as the car is three years old and if it is a keeper I would use an indie of the type described.

I misguidedly stuck with the main dealer network with my SL (from new) until it was seven years old before I switched to Star at Caversham. With the benefit of hindsight I should have switched immediately the car became three years old.........the car and I get a much better and tailored service from Star.

I bought a SLS 2 years ago with 2.5k on the clock for £100k sold it on for £120k and has now been sold again for £165k. In the scheme of things £800 for a service is about average.
Just get out and enjoy the car you will get it all back and more when you sell.
I also agree with Mic about servicing on every day cars but would use MB for something special like an SLS.
PS. Mic, thanks for the loan of your seat at the SLK day.

Well Well,,, this has heated up since yesterday,

I called a few MB dealers yesterday including the original one, they said the SLS has no stamp book, its all on the MB computer so if you go to indi then their system is not updated. They told me it is due an 'A' Service and they can print off all the history if I visit :)

I have decided that its not worth saving £300 per year at this point in the cars life, so im going to MB, the appreciation outweighs the service and insurance costs anyway.

I take on board the comments about buyers liking MB history and fully agree.

as I have done less than 1000 miles last year I will ask to inspect the filters etc. but too embarrassed to throw them in the trunk and drive off

Does anyone think skipping a year might be acceptable given the low mileage ? or maybe later in its life ? I intend keeping the vehicle for another 5 years or so which will dilute the mileage to 2500/year.

I love the comment about 300SL not going to main dealers :D maybe they don't service those every year or 50 miles either...

sooooo wish I had bought one before they started appreciating :(

Many Independents do have access to MB's online service records so can update but I agree at this time in the car's life, better maintaining full MB dealer history.

I don't know if the SLS is on a fixed 12 month/10k mile service interval or does it have the ASSYST variable interval? I'm guessing, being AMG it will be fixed, I'd recommend not skipping any services, no matter how few miles you cover...

You have an SLS and are looking for a cheap service? £800 is pretty decent actually.

Also, skipping a year is a big no no. My dad always says to do this due to my low mileage. Cars have changed though, the advanced oils in these for example will degrade over time. It isn't a mileage issue.

Maybe later in its life if consistently doing low mileage.

My 1997 R129 is still main dealer serviced and has averaged about 1000 miles a year in the 12 years I've had it  It's on about 55k miles now, so 2800 a year from new.

I took it in every 12 months (as per the service schedule) until a few years ago when the service dept. actually suggested to me that I drop it down to every other year because of the light use. They MOT it (special rate of £10) and do a free visual inspection prior to that so it gets a basic check every year regardless.

I'm lucky to have a very good dealer - apart from the cheap MOTs I get 40% off labour and 15% off parts, and they are happy for me to supply my own Mobil 1 (which I buy at Costco), further cutting the service costs.

Thanks guys, some sound advice there :)

I took my SLS to MB, was not expensive, got my service print out, sorted.

was not worth doing it any other way as far as i am concerned

Not only would I take an SLS to an MB dealer, I would be tempted to take it to a an AMG centre that is experienced in the servicing of these vehicle.

It may be even worth taking it to the service centre at MB World, as they will have technicians that have regularly worked on SLS's.

Not sure if suppling your own oil is still something that MB allows, but that saves a few quid.

Ive booked it in at Warrington, they are an AMG centre. they did a free health check when I bought it, passed with no advisories. :thumb:

+ they owe me an AMG jacket, for buying the wife a GLC AMG line while I was there

The only specialist/indy I can imagine would have experience with a car like that would be John Haynes but they couldn't be further away from you!

Well, its done and it took 5 hours.

the time apparently is in stripping stuff off, for changing and checking the dual clutch oil, which needs heating up to temp and test driving and re checking the level.
All the correct components were actually changed, cos I checked

P.S. had a slight muscle flexing moment with a Mugen Honda FK2 Civic Turbo on the way home...... "yawn" cup of tea anyone :p

That's complete garbage pal:fail, but no surprise duff info from a stealer:doh:

Most established MB indys have access to the online Mercedes Digital Service Book (DSB)...recent MB's do not have a service book unless you ask for one...its all recorded online:crazy:

I see your using MB Warrington, if you go indy in the future... established local indy is MBtech Warrington (not far from the stealer actually) used by me and many on the MB forums...note they are trained ex MB senior techs...if calling ask for Shane or Will.
