Where to sell personal plate

You could try ebaying it, thats where i bought mine.

Depends on the type of number plate, i.e. how desirable it is. You could try some other agents. Ebay doesn't sound like a bad idea but I find it hard to search for number plate combinations on there.

How about posting it in the classifieds section on the forum?

A couple of years ago, I (stupidly) asked this outfit for a valuation. They offered £2K there and then and subsequently bombarded me aggressively with e-mails, letters and forms - some of which almost inferred I had entered into some sort of contract.

Clearly, their mark-up must be pretty generous when they were so keen to get their paws on my 1952 plate.

This was also my experience.

Ebay worked fine, and you might consider The Sunday Times (£67?) if it is worth more than a couple of hundred pounds.

Thanks all. Never thought of selling it on eBay, worth giving it a go. As I am new to the forum I don't have acess to putting anything on the classifieds section yet. Need to get posting.

Cheers

Simon

I sold one on ebay last year. Advertised several times, with no bids, and very very little interest. Listed it again some months later, and it sold within a hour or so for my buy-it-now price. It's all about luck - someone looking when you're selling. Good luck with the sale!!

PS Why not post it in the classifieds on this forum?

Bought mine on ebay because I had a standing "search" which updated me automatically whenever anyone posted my initials on a Cherished Plate.

3 weeks later, my initials with *** 1V

Perfect. £1500 but I've got it for life.

Looks great on the e class

Or until the DVLA one day change their mind.........;)

I think the Sunday Times is a good place but dearer.
Get you rown valuation by looking at simliar for sale on Regtransfers etc.

The reg companies are a waste of time, tell you a plates worth loads, but it never sells.

I just bought a couple of plates on ebay for a fraction of the money regtransfers had them up at.

e bay will force the price of plates down

Great if you want to buy one, not so great if you want to sell one.

I suppose it depends on what the number is and how much you want for it. What is desireable to some is not to others. I think we all think our private plate ( especially if its a bit different ) is worth more than, and is better than everyone elses....suppose its the same thing as we all think our kids are better than everyone elses, and we are all better drivers than the next person....Oh and the other ole cherry ...that we are always right and everyone else is a nob....soryy I ve ad a beer........................  :)

Nob!

fancy thinking I may be wrong?:)

but the point he makes is valid, everyone does think they are worth a fortune, but who wants to pay a fortune for one? just keep on trying different options, it will go eventually! I have mine on retention, its worth about £8k according to Regtran, but its worth more to me! i just took it off the SLK coz i felt it would be better with SLK in its reg. I am sad like that! and its worth far too much to put on the Suzuki.

I have a plate assigned to my Porsche (4 digits - three letters, one number) valued at around £7-8k by 3 of the largest agencies including Newreg and Regtransfers. I am having trouble selling on eBay for £3k :(

I have however sold 3 plates on eBay. Each one has been a smooth transaction and achieved better prices than expected. I've also bought a few too. If you are the eBay buyer then you need to be patient as the transfer process can take a few weeks so make sure you have as many details of the seller as possible (home address, landline phone number, faxed copy of the retention form, etc). I did get a bit nervy when I've just handed over hundreds or even thousands and not heard or received anything for 3-4 weeks

If you are the seller than make sure you charge either £105 for transfer/retention (plus an extra £25 for change of nominee fee if applicable) or if you've already got the number on retention and have already paid the transfer fee then you can charge just the £25 for change of nominee. I usually add this to the postage cost and make it clear that this is for the DVLA fee and not for postage. Good luck :)

Cheers,
Steve

Yes.... my kids know they are better than all the rest and they think I am the nob! The beginning of the teenage years.

Will give DVLA a bell to find out the cost and procedure. Suppose the advantage of selling it through an agency is that they deal with all that for you. But at a price. Think eBay will be my first port of call.

Thanks

I must be the only person that's applied to have the original number put back on my car. They've gave me a little hassle at first, but when I took the vehicle to the dvla office and explained that the vehicle had been totally restored as original and I wanted the original licence plate as given in the service book they relented, the guy loved the car!

By the way please indulge my spelling obsession by putting the 'k' in knob. 'Nob' is another colloquial term for toff, which I'm sure is not the intended insult!

You are right that it is a slang word. In this part of the country it is now spelt and widely acknowledged as Nob !....at one stage it was spelt Knob ! ...but that was the old fasioned way, and we have to move with the times !!.....Hey this could turn out to be a good thread !!! :p

I sold v8pny on ebay but didnt get much for it £500... only 1 bid as well.
I bought SB 322 in 2000 for £5,000 from Markhunt.co.uk and sold it back throught them for just a bit more earlier this year. Reg transfers are rubbish .

I'd give mark hunt a try for buying or selling , a small firm and a good personal service.

Yes I have always fought that the way to spel nob woz nob! Wel from were i cum from.

I have emailed Markhunt.co.uk for a valuation.

Thanks Steve.
