I will soon be buying a 4 x4 with a budget of around 22K.

I have been looking at the Land Rover Freelander 2 HSE ( top of range) 2 year old http://www.whatcar.com/car-reviews/land-rover/freelander-4x4/2-2-td4e-hse-5dr/specifications/57170 , and the Mitsubishi Outlander Diamond ( top of range) 1 year old ish :) http://www.whatcar.com/car-reviews/...4x4/2-2-di-d-diamond-5dr/specifications/51310

I suspect a 4/5 year old ML would be too costly to run as a second vehicle in my early retirement this year when I become a man of leisure :bannana:

Both the Land Rover and Mitsubishi are loaded with plenty to keep me amused. The Mitsubishi doesn't have Xenons as an option though... which is relatively high on my want list as driving at night on and off road on tracks etc is better with the extra light.

Anyone any thoughts opinions or advice ?

thanks

What do you want to do with the car? A lot of people complain that the Freelander gives really poor fuel consumption, in fact they seem to be on par with a TDV6 Disco!

If it's to have as a "toy"/object of enjoyment then how about a nice, well restored Series Land Rover?

Town mpg 33.2

Out of town mpg 49.6

Average mpg 42.2

I thought these figures were pretty good for the Freelander 2.

The vehicle will be for dogs, fishing, photographic gear etc

Some people on the Land Rover forum I use are way below 30 :(.

If it's serious mudplugging you're going to be doing Freelander over the outlander everytime. Phone up LR. Tell them you're seriously interested in the Freelander and you were advised to go on one of their experiences. After that don't see Outlander figuring in your decision making process. The LR is a serious off roader. Whereas is most of your time is on road and just occassioally on a bit of grass etc. Why not look at an estate car, especially if you're concerned over fuel consumption etc.
Outlander is built alongside Citroen crossover and Peugeot off roader thingy. So is very froggy.

Have a look at the new Jeep Cherokee. A few of my huntin' / shootin' / fishin' aquaintances swear by them. Probably not as refined as some of the European / Jap 4 x 4's but excellent value for money and seem very reliable with good mud plugging capability. You should be able to pick a brand new one up for under 20K.

If you are going off-road on a regular basis, a Freelander unquestionably. The terrain response system is excellent and makes mud-plugging much easier.

Not at all. Citroen C-Crosser and Peugeot 4007 are Mitsubishi's with different badges and Ford/PSA diesel engines (which are also put in the Outlander because Mitsi haven't got a decent diesel of their own)

Do you believe published mpg figures? I don't.

Presumably you have small dogs if you're thinking of a Freelander?

Plenty of room in the boot of a Freelander - over 700 litres, which is good enough for several large dogs.

Another vehicle to bear in mind is a Subaru Legacy/Outback with the boxer diesel. Excellent offroad capability.

Lets be serious here neither of these could ever be called a serious off road vehicle and are only at best a "SOFT ROADER" if you want to get an off road vehicle then you'd be better looking at either a discovery or a shogun / pajero all of which can be picked up for the same sort of money or less and will stand up to off road use better than the freelander or outlander as these (i know from experience) are totally C--P off road and were only ever designed for "people who lead an active lifestyle" ie tow a jet ski or perhaps at most need to travel along slippery ROADS these two vehicled simply dont have anywhere near enough ground clearance to cope with and real off orad conditions and not to mention approach, departure and ramp break-over angles that will remove front and read bumpers or leave you bellied out over the slightest of road ground

Mitsubishi Shogun, tough as old boots and quite nice to drive, I've had 3 of them over the years and they have all 'had a life'. Add some decent tyres (BF Goodrich All Terrain) and you're away. The 3.2 diesel is a great engine especially in the SWB version.

I have along with several work colleagues have had all types of 4x4 s over the last 6 or 7 years both either our own vehicles or ones used for work purposes, & believe me Land Rovers were the worst of the bunch they still suffer from transmission problems even after all these years , go Japanese i cannot comment on Mercedes 4x4 s as our departments budget cannot run to these. My work partner has just offloaded his 58 reg freelander after 2 years of non stop problems now has a Qashqai . I myself have run a Subaru forester for the last 6 years with no problems at all & at 94,000 miles &have never even had to top up the oil between services , & correct me if am wrong are not Land Rover owned by Tata makers of some of the worst cars on the planet!!

I think I will go Japanese, either Shogun or Mitsubishi Outlander

thanks

Very wise decision, i am sure you will be very peased with either of these have driven both of these hard & fast in the course of my duties terrific vehicles.
