My father is about to return to UK from overseas and has asked me to pick him up a 4x4 for circa 15k.

Only requirement is that its an auto, reliable and not an X5 or ML.

He's mentioned Toureg or XC90,and would quite happily go for a big petrol engine if he gets much better value for money.

I know nothing about the 4x4's so thought i would open it up to you guys.

Cayenne? Range Rover? on this budget?

I'm based in London so any dealers recommended in the south-east?

Thanks

Alex

Cayenne, Toureg would get my nod. X5s are good but if he don't want one he don't want one. I had 2 and they were excellent fun.

However all Cayennes are petrol (they only just brought out a diesel) but they toureg has a V6 diesel. I wouldn't have the volvo as I do not like them much. A discovery or rangie makes a compelling choice too.

Agree on the X5, i like them but he has a BMW issue that at 60 he's still not got over.

Large petrol engine is not an issue for him, esp if he gets more for his money value wise

Cayenne or toureg by a country mile then. I don't think Q7s or Q5s are in budget. If he needs AWD but not a jeep type thing Audis A6 allroad is a compelling left field choice, as is a legacy outback.

Cayenne, Range Rover or a Touareg would get my vote too...

Also worth considering a Hemi powered Grand Cherokee :D

Few of the pistonheads lads suggested that too.

Could get one still under warranty, and the best bit is he's moving back from Canada so is used to American interior quality:D

doesn't mean he will like it. IMHO there are better cars for the same money but a hemi is a lovely engine I suppose.

That's the amazing thing, a Grand Cherokee will be much newer than any of the other cars. The 'quality' is the only issue and as your Dad didn't want an ML or an X5 I thought twice before suggesting it!

What does he intend to do with it?

Huge gulf between "lifestyle" 4x4's and things which can actually cope with rough stuff.

Fiat Panda ?

Oh Fiat is not Auto sorry ;)

£15,000 would buy a really nice 4-5 year old Toyota Landcruiser D4-D, with low mileage and a good spec. They look great.

Or a Nissan Patrol.

Bloke at work him and his wife both have d4d toyota landcruisers for a few years and no bother apart from regular servicing.

Range rover meaning p38 shape google prop/diff problems might do 15k between props/diffs:D, lose money hand over fist.

Ive had 4 discoveries and whilst they took me everywhere and i mean everywhere they are certainly not without their troubles, of course if you mean the new squarer shape they are meant to be good machines.

Volvo probably best machine and to be fair unless hes going to do some serious off roading why have the crap handling?

we've got an '06 VW Tow-rag 3.0 litre diesel its got a bit of go, leather, sat-nav and the build quality is very good. we abuse the inside with three kids and pretty much get it to carry us all over the place (on-road). we dont do mega miles so the consumption doesnt get our backs up that much.

its been a really solid, easy to live with car. i'm sure the trade-in would be less than 15k so a 20-30k petrol version would be there or there abouts.

the 5 litre diesel is apparently luverly:rock:

Made a mistake:wallbash: the p38 rangie isnt the one that suffers from diff failure its the later shape 02 ish onwards.

Bloke i knew had a new 03 reg one and had 3 diffs in under 50k, suprisingly he said he wouldnt be buying another:D

I had an 02 Rangie, I never had a problem with the diffs, only the gearbox! I did a fair few miles in it and have to say that the 4.4 engine was a peach, the levels of comfort inside were astounding and although I will get flamed for it I will say that this it was a nicer place to be than the merc:o

You can easily get a current shape Range Rover(02 onwards shape) for £15k, thier much better built than the P38 but still have the odd niggle the diffs were done free under recall in the last year or so and are now trouble free as they uprated them I believe, I would personally go for one of them for the money but definatly get the petrol V8 over the diesel, my second choice would be a Cayenne.

Range Rover every time. Just such a nice place to be.

The longest I ever owned a car was a Range Rover which I had for 7 years. Loved it, even the the oddities, enough to put up witht he maintainance.

What are running costs on a Cayenne? Must be eye watering surely? (I don't mean fuel).
