Chaps.
Ive got a Blackberry bold 9000 which i like a lot. Contract not up for ages. Its playing up since I dropped it and not insured (never again). It could do with being sent off for repair but I have real issues with o2's crappy repairers based on past experience, plus the loan phone will be email-less which I can't really do these days.
I will probably bite the bullet and do a sim-free replacement handset, then when my contract is up next year take the upgrade and sell it on.
Which of the current handsets is good? The 9700 does away with the rollerball which for someone with often-dirty hands is a bonus, but whilst on the plane back from hols I saw a guy had what looked to be a touch screen Blackberry which may be better (I use those Carphone-Warehouse screen protectors, awesome).

Any thoughts ? I dont want an iphone as its a Bberry contract.

the previous touchscreen called storms were really bad. The screen too ages to come back up hence typing was really slow.
Just got myself a Storm2 9550 - i think its brilliant. Much improved. I would recommed it fully. But remember iPhone is still the best phone ever made - :)

Agree, get the 9700 (Bold v2) with the touchpad instead of the trackball.

Try the curve 8520 a little smaller than the bold but just as good.

9700 or 8520 (9700 would be my choice).

Not a huge BB fan but their screens are amazing, and the touchpad is pretty useful.

Oh, and the BB touchscreen experience is... hmmm... sub-optimal, for my liking.

Have been playing with a SonyEricsson Vivaz, their new touchscreen - keep trying boys, keep trying. Does do HD video which is going to be huge this year on mobiles though.

My brother has the original bold and thinks its fantastic, have compared it to the new bold and the new one feels a bit too small. If your happy with the bold, why not pick a used one cheap from either e-bay or somewhere like computer exchange, until your contract is up for renewal.

My brother-in-law switched from the iPhone 3G to the Storm2 and after several replacements as the Storm was naff, he was given the new bold and he really likes it.

So either way, new or old I would say Bold is the way to go.

OK this is a comment from a long-time Nokia user, but my advice would be to avoid both the Storm & the Storm2. I had a Storm on try out for a couple of months and while the larger display was great, the touchscreen is, err... sub-optimal. If you enjoy having to correct mis-types all the time then you'll love it, but as someone said on another forum: there's a reason why BlackBerry give you ten attempts to get the security password right

Regarding the Storm2, I have it on good authority from a friend who works on customer support for one of the UK's leading mobile telco's that it's hopelessly unreliable and the subject of many, many, replacement handsets.

The 8520 is only a 2G device is it not?

No-one should be buying non 3G capable devices anymore as all network improvements are now only performed on the 3G network which is now improving week on week.

I have had a storm 2 from when they were released and have had no probs with it and with various updates it runs lightening fast and i cant say i find mis typing or anything any kind of problem at all since you still have to push the screen like a giant button to select anything anyway. Horses for courses i guess but i find it easy peasy to use.....

It's G3.

According to the Blackberry link I just posted it doesnt support the 2100 UMTS/hdspa band which is 3G. :o

The device only supports EDGE which is multiple 2G streams.

Fair enough - maybe I lack dexterity or something :dk:

As an aside, I really wanted to like the Storm as the larger screen is a boon for those of us who are the north side of 40 and whose near vision isn't what it used to be. Unfortunately, I found the touchscreen just too frustrating to use :(

I'm glad you're happy with your Storm2 - as you say, horses for courses and all that :thumb:

Can confirm this 8520 only 2G, reason I know is I have just gone through this same exercise my findings,

Curve some only 2G and phone too wide
Storm complete pile of cr*p for business typing on touch screen is dire

Gone with Bold 9700 complete with sat nav 3g all the bells and whistles and expenses log and the BB app store is good.

Just my 2p worth

PS iPhone no good for business battery life just is not long enough

Well it was all going swimmingly with all the advice above I went to the o2 store to get a price for a sim-fre 9700.

£480, not bl**dy likely :(

You can pick them up sim free and unlocked for around £320, Vodafone Business direct were doing them for this a while ago. Even cheaper if you travel in Europe saw one in Madrid €299 Euro, would be worth shopping around if you want one
