Hi all, took my calipers off this morning as I'm having them painted, will need to top up the system when it comes to refit.

Now which brake fluid do I use??

Says dot 4+ on the cap

But when I went to the motor factors they looked in there book and tried to sell me 5.1. At that point I gave up and left it.

All I want to know is exactly which fluid to buy to top up.

Thanks

I would have thought a 63 would use 5.1 but the fact it says 4+ on the cap would contradict this If you were driving a 63 as it's meant to be driven I would want 5.1 in there but if it's already filled with 4 then I wouldn't mix the 2 Sure one of the indies will advise shortly

5.1 is backwards compatible iirc so the car won't explode using it.

I would also recommend as it's a lot more heat resistant.

Would certainly recommend emptying the reservoir and fully flushing through the system using 5.1.

You will need to bleed the brakes in any case.

What's the difference between dot 4 and dot 4+?

Min dry and wet boiling points, unless i missed it the wikipedia link didn't mention DOT 4+ which is the same basic flavour as dot 3, 4 and 5.1 but has min boiling points of 270°C dry and 180° wet, or at least that's what Wurth claim here... http://www.wurth.co.uk/data/productdocuments/070266.pdf
The internet suggests that DOT4+ has similar viscosity to DOT 4 unlike DOT 5.1 which is typically a lower viscosity brew although as they're all miscible* with each other...

* with the exception of the silly silicone based dot 5 stuff

Just go to MB parts for the fluids as there cheap enough, inc oils and filters.
