Hello

i am new to Mercedes and I woudl liek to know which car would be better to buy.

My budget is around £1500, under 100k mileage.

I have found the following on autotrader and not sure which one to go for?

Mercedes-Benz C Class 2.0 C200 Kompressor Avantgarde 4dr

Mercedes-Benz C Class 2.0 C200 Kompressor Elegance 4dr

I would prefer the lower litre car though

With that kind of budget for a Merc you'd want to budget another £2k on repairs as many things will need doing at that age ie consumable parts like ball joints etc. if I were you I'd save a bit more money and buy a much more younger one

even on 68k i would need to make such huge repairs? i though 68k would be reasonably low?

My current car I have is a honda civic which i bought on 98k 4 years ago for £1k. i done 70k miles and spent proabably £1k on servicing and maintanence and repairs over 4 years.

Go for one with full M-B/ MB Specialist history. In theory, the consumables that need replacing with age might have already been done….see if the car has "every receipt", for example, and see what work has been done.

There's a big difference between Japanese and German cars......

Which is why I own Japanese and lease German. :)

what do you mean full M/B ?

The 1st one looks better condition from the pic's, both blue ones look like they have rusty rear arches. The 1st silver one says Fsh by Mb and has only done 82k

i am going to ignore the 1.8 blue ones they are too far.

the 1st one has full M/B history except last service done by local garage. (£1749). but he had no repairs done to it, other than just normal servicing.

2nd one has no service history. however the 1st one said he will accept £1600 or less. also it has no leather interior.

Does it matter with the differnce trims? Avantgarde / Elegance / Classic ?

Classic = standard. Elegance = more traditional / chrome and walnut dash IIRC. Avantgarde = more sporty / fake carbon fibre dash (again IIRC)

Classic was the cheaper option, Avantgarde and Elegance cost the same as each other (yet again IIRC)

I think it was just all mercs at them times , I have seen s class's with loads of corrosion ,,but saying that I do like the c class that age better than the one that took over

I am planning to purchase this one as it has full service history and owner has made repairs so it should save me some cost. he agreed to accept less than £1600

Can anyone tell me what to look out for? how can i tell if gearbox clutch is fine, or any other noises or cranks the car may make if it is bad.

I bought a merchant c class for 1350 with the following problems.

Boot sensor does not work. Need to use key to open.
noise when I press acceleration on low revs. Last for about 2 secs. Happens when rev goes up and when it comes down.
some rust on the arch and door corner and bumper corner.

Can anyone tell me what the noise can be? Or recommend me where I can go to get it fixed. I live in Paddington. London.

Very possible it from the belts that drive the alternator, supercharger etc. Maybe a belt tensioner, idler or the belts themselves? Wayne Gates is highly recommended on here if Harrow would suit you. Good luck with the new motor. :thumb:

I am actually around harrow most weekends. Are they reasonable and charge reasonavle and won't fob me off because I don't know anything
