Which code reader - 1996 SL600 ?

I am totally confused as to which fault code reader in need for my 1996 SL600.

From what I have read the diagnostic system on this generation is a bit of a hybrid, could someone please explain in layman's terms.

I hear the name Star banded about but would prefer to spend less.

Most cars from around 1998 as standard have a 16 pin eobd socket fitted which means one plug fits all cars in most cases on a diagnostic machine, bmw/Mercedes are a couple that have a different connector, you will need a round 38 pin socket, I doubt a "cheap" reader will have this plug.

Your only option for a decent reader is a Star. Everything else will be useless.
