Which E Class would you go for?

I'm in the process of selling my CLK and it's currently on Auto Trader. My next car I'm looking at will be a W212 E Class. I'm considering an E250 CDI and an E350 CDI. Looking to spend no more than £12k. They will be in Sport trim.

Which is the better engine? Iv heard the 250 engine had injector issues. Was this sorted out on 2011-2012 cars? Iv got a V6 diesel in my CLK and love it so thinking more about the E350. But I can get perhaps a 2012-13 250 CDI for my money whereas only a 10 plate E350 CDI...

I don't do many miles, perhaps 100 a week on average and a motorway run once a month. I'm also considering the CLS Grand Edition and also a W211 E55...

Thoughts?

cls500/ or 320 cdi , or a w212 e350 cdi would be my choice if i didnt want a Amg variant

You don't do enough mileage for a CDI. You will get more for your money in terms of car, if you go for a petrol engined one since these will be over looked by folks who *need* diesels.

A very late 219 CLS is nice - especially one with the 2009 Comand. Any of the V8 Es will be lovely. The W212 has a more contemporary feel than a W211 but to be honest a MY2009 W211 Avantgarde with everything in it is a very accomplished car.

Iv got the same engine in my CLK so an E320 CDI wouldn't be an option as I'm after something newer.

I totally agree I don't need a diesel but I like the performance and MPG they give. Also I tend to keep my cars 6-8 months before moving on and a diesel Mercedes will hold their value better and be easier to sell on..

You could get a decently-specced 2010 350 CDI for around £12k.

Probably a higher mileage one (80k+) as dealers seam to ask £13-14k for low miles ones. Mileage shouldn't matter if they're motorway miles.

A lot of car for the money, Sport trim looks good inside and out, seats are great, you get ILS (I think) and the engine really suits the the character of the car.

is a e350 or e320 not the same engine 3.0 derv? in anycase i was refereeing to a 320cls.

It's a different engine bud. I'm after the later 350 engine

Hi,

I understand your point about the performance, more importantly the torque and it's also a consideration if you want to move them on a bit.

I had the 350CDI in my previous shooting brake CLS, which put out 265HP IIRC and 550NM which gave quite nice performance but that output didn't appear until they had moved on to the W218 / X218 generation not the W219.

The grand edition W219 engine is a remapped 320CDI engine ( a Brabus map I believe ?) according to my understanding to give a little more power.. but to be honest I get totally lost in all the derivatives of the OM642 engine..

With your mileage I'd still go for a lower mileage V8. I was in your shoes with a similar decision and I don't do a lot of miles, but like the torque and easy nature of the V6 Diesels. My budget was slightly different, but not really the point because it's illustrative of the kind of change I'm talking about.

I don't regret it one bit - from a late 2012 25K Mile 350CDI V6 Shooting Brake CLS AMG Sport (Sensible trousers) to a 19K Mile 2014 E63 Saloon 5.5 BiTurbo V8 (One Life - Live it). From 38MPG to 19 to 25 MPG. From 265HP and 550NM to 557HP and 750NM :) From low depreciation to high depreciation :)

Go get the E55 you've always wanted :)

I can't comment on 212 350 CDI but only 250 CDI. Bare in mind that this is my first privately owned diesel car hence my over happiness with it (previous petrol's were I6,V6,V8).
My main reason for going for diesel were mpg's and VED so I didn't consider 350 at all and was brainstorming should I go for 200, 220 or 250. At the end I've decided to go for 250 because of slightly better power 201bhp and 500Nm torque which I need for our camping trips.
In first 1000 miles of mixed driving I’ve got an average of 41.8 mpg and on motorways and A roads it goes to 48.5 – enough good reason for me to be very happy.:bannana:

In idle it is a bit agricultural but in drive this noise disappears immediately. Again I wasn’t looking for anything sporty but comfort so Avantgarde was my choice.

i was in exactly the same boat 7 months ago - E350 or E250.

In the end i went for a 2012 E350 cdi and have not regretted it for one minute!

I did pay £16k for it, but it was well spec'd but I believe the prices have come down since.
I've had (touch wood!) 7 months of hassle free motoring, with plenty of power and relaxed cruising. I do 25k annually, so my situation is slightly different.

I'm glad i did not go for the smaller engine - test drive both if you can.

Depends on the service history

I've found myself wanting to find that inbetween car.

The cls500 is it. I used to take the piss out of the 5.0 v8 as it was underpowered for its size.

My take is as follows.

Power, 306bhp which is smooth but will get up and go and far out perform a 3.0 derv that I had in my cls320 cdi years ago. Obviously it's not as fast as my old cls55 but it doesn't really matter for my daily.

Mpg wise it's spot on where I want it to be. I used to return 40 at best from my cls320 cdi (others say they can get more but I do question this on real world driving I.e. Putting the hammer down and driving up Cornish hills) Running around I'd get 26/27 from the 3.0.

Now the 5.0 is returning me 28 on a run and 19 around town. So not much less in my opinion but I get a thumping v8 that will put a lot of cars to shame.

I wouldn't go back 350 or 320 cdi now as I drive my fathers 07 e320 cdi and it's just not enough for me. A bmw 530d is a much better diesel in my opinion.

What are peoples thoughts on this? Used Palladium Silver Mercedes E500 For Sale | Cheshire The mileage is high but as said I only do about 100 miles a week. Would the mileage put you off?

Yes, if you only keep cars for 8 ish months you would take a decent hit on price on that.

My sister has a 2010 e350 cdi coupe in white she's been trying to sell and it's immaculate. No phones calls at all and it's priced well. I don't know if they're overly popular
