Hi all, I need some advice on which is the best filter for my 203 cdi.
I have used Fram filters before on other marques (and always been happy with them), but I have never owned a MB before so need some guidance.
What are your recommendations for oil, air and pollen filters, and the best place to buy them?

You could use genuine filters or...

Oil, Hengst or Bosch
Air, Hengst, Bosch, Mann
Fuel, Hengst, Bosch, Mann
Pollen, Hengst, Mirofilter

I have seen kits of Mann filters (oil, air, fuel and pollen) for about £55 from GSF parts, and asumed mann would be reasonable/good quality.
Who makes the OEM filters?

Fram, QH etc ae ok but I wouldnt use them on my MB's. I have had issues when using non OEM filters..

go by Ollys rule above.

Warning. Necro-thread revival! 👻
Thought it was worth updating this thread with some recent YouTube research on air filters.

Good watch here for the anoraks:

To save you the best part of 20 minutes of your life, in summary, Hengst have a new air filter plant in Poland, and their air filters are the absolute business in terms of consistency, construction, filtration and fit.
Amazingly (or maybe not so amazing if Hengst are taking their work seriously), it looks like Hengst are still at the top, and @BlackC55 's recommendation of nearly 13 years ago is still valid.

That’s a relief I used all Hengst filters on the E class the other day without doing any research :)

I only ever use MB oil filters as the engine is hyper-critical and there's no reason not to. They are cheap and we order them in batches.

I recently fitted a Mahle air filter and the fit was not so precise as the Mann filters I've used before.

Fuel filter: MB only.

Just my 2c worth.

The fuel filter is a Mann it's stamped on the original

Interestingly in one of the filter reviews done by the YouTube presenter of the vid I linked to, the VW original oil filter by, I think Mann, didn't seem as good as the aftermarket one, but the Purflux VW and aftermarket filter did appear to be the same quality.

For the engine air filter test, the Hengst filter performed better than the VW OE.

I think the safest bet is original filters, but the price can be an issue. If the original manufacturer filters are a similar price to e.g. Hengst, just go original to be safe.

Which air filter did you use please?
And even if it wasn't this one, how did you find the fit on the filters?

Was it E1328L-2? This is for around 2007 onwards.

I am the much cheaper filter version as my 2009 was an end of run before your much more expensive air filters . Yours are normally £70+ , mine are low £20’s in a sale (for both)
My Hengst are E1029/30 on Autodoc …£11 each in their 41% off today

Wow. Just checking prices of air filters for my W212 E350, part number A6420940000.
It's £81.50 including the 15% off from Mercedes Benz LSH Autos ebay store (thanks @Skd884 for the code), who are the cheapest genuine Merc filter I can find.

Hengst E1328L-2 is £43.83, so at nearly half the price, I'm going to give the Hengst filters a go.

Don’t forget to write it all down on your “lists” buddy

Of course, that's the best bit 😄
I also went with a Mahle CareMetix antibacterial cabin/pollen filter (LAO314 - £30.86 from Opie Oils ebay shop) and an an Elring batwing>turbo orange seal (519.290 - £10), as the Merc ones seem to be pretty pricey at the moment.
I have a Merc fuel filter in stock.
Need to get these on in the next few weeks before the service and MOT.
I'll report back on the fit and apparent construction quality of the Hengst and Mahle filters 👍

My wife's "Genuine" Merc oil filter was actually made by Hengst....some AMG ones are too......see this at about 4.01.

Just fitter the Hengst E1328L-2 air filters.
They seem very high quality and the fit was perfect. I almost want to say the housing fit was better than the Merc filter that came off. I'd recommend them.
And oh boy, were they needed!

How many miles on those old filters buddy ?
Not entirely sure, as they were fitted in the service before I got my car. So a conservative guess (i.e. on the high side) is around 20k miles. But it's been 4 years.
I inspected them last year and they weren't too bad, but I've put quite a lot of miles on in the last 12 months. MOT around New Year, so I'm starting to tick jobs off in preparation. I'll fit a new Merc fuel filter when the orange turbo/intake/charge air seal turns up with the cabin filter. The air filters can be easily changed without disturbing the batwing.
