Which fuel do you guys use?

Why the downer on Tesco fuel ?

Serious question.

Judging by feedback from a decent amount of people, this momentum stuff is apparently quite good.

I think what puts people off (me being one) is the likelihood of blunders being made by the handling and transportation methods but green grocers who sell fuel.
The contamination fiasco being the main one.

Some people also have an issue with the additives that Tesco uses in the fuel.
Not sure what it is off the tot of my head - maybe summer-berry fruit juice? :D

Personally, I prefer to buy my fuel from a company that only deals in fuels.
No chances of them transporting fuel in a lorry that was used for transporting milk the previous week.

I also want a clean fuel as the wellbeing of my engine is probably more important to me than performance.

I'll happily pay a premium for it too, rather than buying fuel from a green grocer because you get money off it if you buy eggs and orange juice

Hmmm in fairness that particular one is plain and simple stupidity.

I know practically nowt about the industry but I do know that my car responds well to Tesco 99.

Surely it all comes from the same place in a raw petroleum form and is then "hopped up" by the brand owner somewhere between the refinery and the pump ? Or do refineries keep big tanks for the various brands where they brew up ?

I have had the AMG for a year now and have only used normal unleaded - usually Shell as it i closest. I don't drive much - 3k/year max and often short journeys. How much am I missing by not using V Power or Tesco 99?

My understanding is that the refineries keep stock of the additives that the various companies request/need/want. The tankers fill up on 95/97 fuel, then get the additives added.

Just my misguided understanding based on internet knowledge...

What I find funny is the tesco-fuel bashing, when most fuel companies have had their share of contaminated fuel. A quick google for "contaminated shell fuel" brings up a few of those as well...

BP: http://www.tcpalm.com/news/2014/jun/24/bad-fuel-bp-station-fort-pierce-damages-few-vehicl/
Shell: http://www.click2houston.com/news/money/man-claims-local-shell-station-sold-him-bad-diesel/26538114
(yes, these are international, but they are 1-month and 1-week old. Trawling through older news will bring some closer to home)

Not much, but if your car is supposed to use it, and you don't, then it's likely the ECU will adjust timing to prevent preignition, and limit power output. Whether you would notice is a different question.

Thanks. I think I need a clean break and use the good stuff for a few tanks to see the effect

In the UK the major incidents (where it is admitted/proven, rather than one person saying their car was running a bit funny) have all been supermarkets AFAIK. Tesco have had at least 3 proven cases of storage tanks filled with the wrong type of fuel in the last couple of years, plus the big silicone contamination problem (which also affected Asda and Morrisons, but no oil major forecourts).

If I'm going to use supermarket fuel I tend to fill up at Sainsburys. I don't recall them having had any issues.

Agree with Bobby Dazzler's post but also...if you put in say 2000 litres a year, that's about £120 extra. Not much really to do things 'properly'.

EDIT: at 3k miles a year probably £40

good point - very well made!! Filled up yesterday with 95 for the last time - hopefully I will notice a difference and liberate those 510 ponies:bannana:

I had been avoiding shell due to issues with my local garage being less than satisfactory. I've informed HQ about the issues but they say it is independent owned so nothing they can do.

Recently though, I thought I would try them again, and was pleased that I got 238mi out of my weekly £50, did a 2nd week with them and only got 180mi. Considering the traffic was similar or better on the 2nd week I could not understand this 60mi deficit, ok my fill up methods are not scientific, but in my car 60miles is a big difference and a massive change in the needle position. I did challenge Shell if they had any contamination that week but apparently not.
Anyway, that is me again not using them, back to Momentum and Esso 97, both of which normally achieve 210miles easily.

Interesting Krisby, may be time to compare although I'm lucky to hit 18mpg on a good day so may be a little difficult to measure....

On the Germany/Austria trip last week I filled up with minimum 100ron (Shell Racing 100), or 102ron from BP owned Aral Tankstelle and the car ran smooth with nothing of notice however we were hitting high speeds so no clue if the mpg was good or bad.

MPG is not something I care about to be honest, it's Smiles per Gallon that I do :)

I used to put V-Power in our V6 Sharan when we went to Germany - the extra miles (running on cruise control at a steady speed) made a 'one stop strategy' quite comfortable, whereas on standard fuel you had to run the tank practically dry before refuelling to avoid needing a second stop.

Also used it when towing - the increased torque meant you could use 6th gear on the motorway, which you couldn't with standard fuel.

In normal everyday driving I doubt you would have noticed the difference though.

I don't hugely go for mpg, atleast I don't drive to get better mpg, atleast that is what the wife tells me as she grips the sides of her seat.

What fuel and which tyres - the bedrock of any car forum worth its salt surely ? ;)
