Just a quick quick on what ipods are compatible, before we go and splash out on a bigger capacity one.

I have been told (thanks alfie) that the latest gen ipod nano won't work, but is this the 4th gen (chromatic?) Or the smaller (squat) 3rd gen one? I'd prefer to stick with a flash style one rather than a larger hard disk based ipod due to previous bad experiences.

I think 8gb will do, so would prob go for a 3rd gen one, but wanted to make sure it defo worked and also, does it fit the tray OK?

'Think' we might have found it out off of another site - it does say in the manual but Apple is soooooo vague about their gen's and model types etc - in fact i hate itunes & ipods and apple in general - it's arrogant to think you can make a product which is sooooo difficult to use and totally not compatible with anything else! Grrr

This is iPod nano 4G:

It uses the new charging arrangements so probably won't be compatible without an extra adapter.

This is iPod nano 3G which should be compatible and is what I use in my car:

I use a nano 2G in my car, and thats fine also, and somewhat cheaper than the 3rd Gen one on eBay. More the shape of the 4G but not all curvey and only black or white I think.

So are the latest Ipod nanos (4th generation) and the latest ipod touches (2nd generation) not useable with the MB ipod kit? Or can they be used with an adapter?

I got one today which is that shape ^ but only a 2nd gen one...it seems to be working fine (thankfully) - thanks for the info :)

Alfie told me that they are going to bring out an update on the firmware to enable use of later versions - but at the moment there is not functionality for the brand new ones :(

You can get a charging adapter made by Scosche which should get it working.

MB are meant to be releasing an adapter cable to fix this issue

The trouble is that the new iPods use 5Volts to charge, the older ones took 12v or 5v, so any 12v only systems (like most car's iPod kits) dont charge the newest iPods.

I have a part number for the new lead, but its an extra part (i.e they arent going to supply it free with existing iPod kits) - and havent been able to get any yet (so part nr may be duff)

sound quality is a key consideration, I have worked with apple products and can tell you that iPods are not created equally! By far the best for sound quality is the current gen touch, the nanos and shuffles are entry level products and much lesser quality products.

The latest ipods will all work with the ipod kit its just that they wont charge.

As Richard says there is a fix coming in the form of a new cable. As soon as we can get our hands on it we will!

All ipods including the iphone will fit the little tray.

For the life of me, I really, REALLY cannot fathom out why Ipods are so popular. Given that they dont support the wordwide music file standard of MP3 by default. Apple seem to have made life for Ipod users as awkward as reasonably possible. I concede that their designs and user interface are great, but their functionality is the polar reverse.
And that regular MP3 players are so much cheaper spec-for-spec it would keep me away from Ipods for ever.

Yes, and given the choice I wouldn't go for an ipod either - I personally think Apple are a bunch of arrogant idiots when it comes to the functionality of their programming and software (but don't get me on that subject!!)

BUT as far as i know the kit only supports ipods.....so unfortunately it's that or nothing.

They do exactly what they say they do, they are not microshaft based and look good.

Apple have always been ahead of the others in terms of design and functionality. I think the fact that so many people buy them speaks for itself.

Lets not forget who invented a window based small computer -Apple.

haha! BUT they don't think about end users in my opinion. They are less concerned with the lowly end users and more arogant in their approach to designing technology.

I use Itunes a great deal and it sux big time. :p They make software which is almost verging on the impossible to use easily unless you have a degree in Apple Mac!! They don't allow you to take YOUR OWN music back off of itunes unless you fart about and find other programs in order to do it etc etc - my gripe with the programming side of Apple is vast.

However, they make a product which works and look good yes, but in my opinion they could excell themselves and go a whole lot further. :)

Itunes is a virus...

It slows down your PC because it sends web analytics back to Apple on your music choices etc. In many cases it can be considered spyware. I dont use it and would recommend Winamp (V5.2 up) or a previous version with the mlipod plugin.

No reason to use Itunes at all, unless you want to **** your computer

Thats a bit harsh.

It doesnt propergate itself across the network(s) or cause any malicious harm to your system so how on earth can you say its a virus? Also, when you start up itunes for the first time there is a user agreement which you have to accept. So it cant be spyware either as you agree to it being used like this!

I suspect you dont like Apple or itunes then.......

Definition of a virus is code that causes some form of unwanted behavior to occur on your PC. In this case that is performance degradation and the installation of additional code during the Itunes installation (something called Apple Bonjour).

It doesn't propagate itself per se across the network but it does send information back to Apple and the Itunes store. This information includes song and album ratings and also your personal listening trends, so that the ITunes store can send you targeted information relative to your tastes.
