i know this has prob been asked before but ive tried searching and cant find an answer,as i dont have a service book for the car i need to know which make and grade of engine oil to use,its for a 1999 clk200,previous owner was using mobil1 0w40 but not sure if thats an overkill.

The minimum spec required would be 229.3, but you can also use the newer spec 229.5.

229.31 and 229.51 are low-ash for diesel engines, they will be OK for your petrol engine as well but there is no need for it.

Viscosity should be one of the following: 0w40, 5w40, or 5w30.

As for make... anything that meets the spec above. Shell Helix Ultra, Mobile 1 , Mobil S, Petronas, MB-branded, are all fine.

See my post elsewhere and buy MB oil from dealer. Cheaper the HAlfords at the moment allegedly.

Miller do an ATF MB and a 5w30 called Trident that has Benz's DIN Nr. on it. Seems to work ok in mine:)
