Which should I keep: S124 300TD or Toyota Prius?

Interesting question.

Personally I can't stand the Pissus - pathetic excuse for eco-mentalists to drive around in being all green - drive a modern BMW diesel - they're more economical! Not to mention the amount of energy it takes to make one and the end of life cycle battery disposal.....

It's a lifestyle viewpoint I guess, although you do get a new car versus one that whilst well now, at 280 odd K will possibly kill a major component quite soon - but then again you do own it outright versus a pissus which is a company motor.....

The OP said if the Prius goes, it goes towards the Mortgage, might be a more financially prudent thing to do and keep the MB 124 which he prefers.

A decent specialist and the car need not cost a bit to run, and once its done, break it for spares, and buy another "banger" and live the "bangernomics" dream.

A new car will be much more hassle free to run, and a Prius does have a hell of a "interesting" drive train which has proven to be reliable too, but financially the depreciation may be a killer and if you want to reduce your home loan a bit why not keep the Mercedes.

Ask yourself which one is depreciating like falling girders. Then decide

As Nick says by far the greatest running cost of a car is depreciation and in those terms its a no -brainer in favour of the Mercedes.:thumb: Assuming it bodily sound?? it has a long life still ahead. Only possibility where the Prius might make sense is if the poster anticipates a lot city driving in the future since I would predict a greater spread geographically of congestion charges in the longer term. :(
You could always trade it in for a Honda CRZ if you fancied something a bit more sporty! Honda CR-Z Hybrid | Book Test Drive | Specification, Finance & Information

The Prius, I think, will become a bit of a 'Classic' one day, as the first of the mainstream leccy/hybrid cars.

In the same way a sinclair C5 is a classic!!!

Bin the prius, the cost to make that car (shipping everything in to Toyota from all over the world) has a higher carbon footprint than a new S-Class S500 (mercedes source 90% of the components within 60 miles of the factory) unless you plan on doing 300k miles in it

W124 all the way :thumb:

:) Drive one and you'll know what I mean - excellent cars - but hey, I didn't knock the Merc diesels either did I - also great cars....

I am a modern BMW convert (bloody recession) so I've got to be allowed a little free speech surely

That is the point I was making. It will imo be a 'classic' one day, because it was the first of it kind to be mainstream. But that does not mean I think it is a good car. The same as the C5 is a classic and not a good way to transport yourself.

"grumpycabbie" on the prius chat forum said exactly what I was thinking!! ...

"Keep the Prius and as the Merc is so old it'll be next to worthless (esp with that mileage) you may as well keep it as a summer/weekend car. Tax it for 6 months over the summer and bung it on a classic car policy for limited mileage. The fuel savings you make with the Prius should cover the expense of keeping the old Merc.

Best of both worlds. (and no I don't want to buy it! lol) " :D

The prius is interesting to drive. but it's all electric and computer driven. Get in, pop your "Key" into the slot and press "power" Engage d and off you go. The computer does the rest, CVT gearbox, constantly switching power sources. Around town it's great, comfy and spacious and well designed. On long runs it's a bit Whiney. Build quality is good, but there's a lot of plastic and I don't think it'll wear as well as the Merc (i know it won't) It's cheap to run, road tax £10 per year and high 50's MPG. But - it's boring, and characterless and a constant source of mockery!

Why are you asking this question, keep the Merc its a much better car that the ever ready one. I know someone who had one and it now needs new batts, quote was over £5k, can now gone for scrap.

My new company car Skoda Octavia Estate with the new Audi 1.6tdi engine does 70+ around town and on the motorway each morning at around 70 - 80 still returns mid to hig 50's. £35 road tax and not a electric motor in sight. Much better car.

I think you would need two moths,I will take the second month, just to help out

Doesnt that drive you mad when you mis spell a word,ah well
