Hi, I’ve a 2005 C320 cdi with 135k miles on its clock, and I’m thinking it’s overdue f or a change of gearbox oil etc but I’m not 100% certain of what model of 7 speed gearbox it has. Can anyone tell me please. Car still goes like a train, the war office can get almost 40mpg, however that’s fallen by about 2mpg since replacing the oil cooler O rings and oxygen sensor? Can’t understand why. Anyway identifying the ‘box will be a great help.

Run the VIN in a VIN decoder, it will tell you the transmission type.

Also, if you switch to manual mode and shift using the + (or flappy pedals if you have them), the 5g should go up to 4th gear and the 7g should go up to 6th gear

If there is an atf dipstick tube in the engine bay you have a 5g box , the 722.6

Many thanks for the help guys, the vin decoders only tell me what I already know I.e. 7 speed. There’s no dipstick, so Markjay wins the prize with the list of gearbox codes. I’m going for the 722.9 7G, coz I’ve got 7 gears.
Many thanks again.

Oh, I’m being a pain I know, but I’m going to have to make a filling tool thing so I need to know the thread size of the drain plug, can anyone help?

There are plenty on eBay, and they are not expensive. E.g.:

Yours will be the earlier 7g-Tronic (introduced 2003), and not the later 7g-Tronic+ , aka 722.9 FE (introduced 2010). Make sure you get the correct ATF for the transmission type.

I believe that your transmission requires ATF to MB Spec Sheet 236.14, ATF 134 or 4134.

Pressed the wrong button. I’m pretty sure I asked them some months ago before I ‘saved’ the listing but now I’m doubting myself, just need a little reassurance.

Just eBay the part number to cross check things

OP , have you got a torque wrench that goes low enough on the scale for the sump bolts ? I think it's around 5 or 8 Nm. Someone on here will know for sure. 👍

Theres a few how too's,torquing the bolts to the right torque,is important.to be honest what a indy will charge to do this job IMHO it is not worth doing it yourself, but hey it will give you satisfaction, just how are you going to raise the car up and keep it level, when my indie did mine they raised the car up on high stilt like axle stands,so that they could get on with other cars on their lifts.

I kind of agree with you ZIP ^^^ I have all the necessary tools and (hopefully) skills to do my own ATF change but I just got my indie to do it as I was busy , the cost was what it was. Getting the car high enough to work under and level without a lift (I have done it to have all 4 wheels off, axle stands ) is a pain in the butt DIY without a lift.

I might do my own next time , just to say I did it :)

Problems, problems. job is on hold, unfortunately my mother in law passed away yesterday so other things to occupy my mind and time. Many thanks for your help guys.
