I have decidedto buy a set of A line AMG replicas from Style Alloys, the tyre packages available are as follow:

4 x wheels with Tornado tyres ( described as ok tyre ? ) £690
4 x wheels with Uniroyal rainsport £775
4 x wheels with Pirelli P6000 £810

What do you think, I require a good safe tyre that is good in the wet as well as on a dry road, I have previously had cheap tyres on a van and they were nothing short of dangerous in the wet.

I've had P6000's in the past and they were OK in the dry but awful in the wet.
Changed them to Goodyears and they were much better even in the dry.

I used to have Uniroyals on my first car(Mini) and they were great but were a bit soft and they only lasted 6,000 miles!. My Dad accused me of wheelspinning everywhere but I said it was cos the 10" tyre did more revolutions than other tyres hence it wore out quicker :D
Everybody has a different opinion on tyres so I try to go by my own experiences.

Why buy expensive and great looking alloys and then fit cheap tyres? It is the tyre not the wheel that ensures your safety and comfort!

Avoid "no name" brands (Tornado, please!) and ask if they can fit a better tyre than the P6000, which is ancient.

I think some of the guys here have used Toyo (OEM on TVRs), which is cheaper than many of the other big brands, or Michelin and Continental.

The TOYO website looks pretty good but no prices, any ideas how much for a 225/45/17.

I was £90 each for a 215/40 R17 if that helps

Get michelins from costco . Should be around £120 a tyre.

Remember its the last thing between you and the road

I've just bought 4 tyres in a similar size... Dunlop SP Sport 2000 E in 235/45 R17, at £105 inc fitting and balance, each.

I chose the Dunlops for pragmatic reasons really, I wanted a decent brand tyre without a rotational tread - that way swapping them round to maintain even wear is possible. The other options were either no-name brands or more expensive.

So far the Dunlops seem fine, but road noise has increased, possibly only down to them being 20mm wider then the GoodYears they replaced on my old wheels.

What I did was to get the prices from mytyres.net and take them into my local tyre place to see what they could do to get my business. If you buy tyres online you need to find a very friendly fitting place to get them put on - most don't like doing it because they lose the profit in the tyres.

Hope that helps, Ian.

Ive had Pirelli P Zero Rosso's and they are great, both in wet and dry, the best thing is iven with 245's they were still quiet.

Ive got got Pirelle p7000's and just wish i went for the rosso's instead, these are too noisy!

I have found an interesting test performed by by Autocar, rating the Bridgestone Potenza S02 as the best overall sports tyre (tested on a Scooby ) and the Goodyear Eagle Ventura as tested on a Ford Focus, makes interesting reading. May be a few years out of date but I am sure that someone can enlighten us.

www.users.totalise.co.uk/~scoobydoo/motoring/tyres1999/tyres1999.htm

But that test is from 1999!! The S02 is no longer available, and the Eagle Ventura is IIRC out of production too...

If you're strapped for cash I'd go for the Toyos. They're a bit noisy but they perform well in wet or dry. Also, if you don't like them, you won't have to wait too long before they wear out. Otherwise I'd go for F1s. I wouldn't touch SO2s or SO3s because the wear rate is unacceptable, even if they're good tyres.

Last year, Autocar (14/10/03) did a performance tyre comparison -- Conti SportContact 2, Michelin Pilot Sport 2, Goodyear Eagle F1, Toyo Proxes T1S, Bridgestone RE050, Dunlop Super Sport Race and Pirelli P Zero Rosso. The Pirelli won overall, Goodyear 2nd, Michelin 3rd, Continental 4th and Toyo 5th. Dunlop was disqualified. Best for wet handling, curved aquaplaning and wet grip was Pirelli. Pirelli was second for dry handling, and straight aquaplaning.

My last set were Toyos on 16" wheels, and the price at the time made them good value. They wore very well, but were noisy, as MainMan says.

I switched to 17" wheels a couple of months ago, and looked at both Toyos & F1s - the price differential on the sizes that I needed was negligible, so I went for the F1s, and 2000 miles later I am very pleased indeed - in all ways (handling / grip) but especially with the quietness compared to the Toyos.

It will be very interesting to see how they wear - although I fully expect this to be more quickly than the Toyos.

Bazza, are you happy with your TOYO'S ? Anything you dont like about them ?

They wear very quickly!, I used to chuck the 190 into corners at silly speeds and the outside edge has taken a battering.
As for noise, I don't notice them over the stereo anyway.
Cheap capable tyres, much better than Falken/marshall etc for not much more cash

I contacted TOYO for a little guidance and here is their reply :

Andy.

Depending on what size 17" tyre you intend to fit the choices are T1-R, T1-S
or Roadpro R610.

The T1-S is our ultra high performance tyre. This tyre gives outstanding
performance in dry and wet conditions. In independent tests we might not win
overall but we always come top in the wet handling tests. This tyre is
fitted OE to a number of specialist car manufactures and is also used in
motorsport as well.

The T1-R is our latest ultra high performance tyre (when I say latest it was
launched last week), this tyre gives the same dry grip as it's predecessor
the T1-S but with improved wet handling, it is also quieter and longer
lasting.

The R610 is our high performance comfort tyre, whist still giving excellent
handling in wet or dry conditions also gives a comfortable ride and longer
life. This tyre is only available in two 17" sizes: 215/45R17 and 225/45R17.

If I can be of any further assistance please give me a call or if you would
like a copy of our latest brochure please let me have your address.
