W209 CLK 270 Avantgarde
Having had 2 W202 C classes, (C220 & C220CDi), I'm thinking about a CLK. The 200K and 270CDi seem to have simialr performance figures. I do about 25k miles/year.

Any thoughts on which to go for. Any comments on how good the car is?

Thanks guys.

M

For that mileage it's clear that the diesel will be cheaper to own. Also when you come to sell the diesel there will be more demand for a high mileage diesel than petrol. In real world driving the diesel will also be faster than the petrol.

I guess I'm saying buy the 270CDi :)

mykulmerc,

Ive been looking at these for a while as a replacement for my W202 maybe next year. I was looking at the 270 cdi, with the sports pack, in silver. An absoloutly stunning car, with the amg body kit, alloys, exhaust and not to forget the pillar-less design. Would be a great buy me-thinks!

Go for a facelifted one, thats a model year 2005 car (datacard code 805, 806,808 or 808), manufactured from about July 2004 onwards. They really are a much nicer car to drive and better put together.

Alfie - Thanks for advice on face-lift model.

sgtbob - I have slight worries about possible problems on CDi270 engine re injectors and turbos. What you think? I've had 2 injector seals replaced on the C220 so far and think a third might have gone. A scary job if the injector won't come out. (apparently)

Would the petrol engine be less prone to problems?

And less smelly :)

I think for the mileage you drive, the diesel is the least pocket-emptying version to get.

Things can go wrong whichever engine type you choose and covering large mileages is only going to make these events appear more often.

Thanks, Baron,

any particular problems with engines that you are aware of?

Not having the diesel, I can't comment much.. however, what I do know is the Valeo issues with the radiator... do a search on here for it... you'll bring up lots of info.. happy hunting....Otherwise as long as it has good history and looks a respectable example go for it... The 209 doesn't suffer with the rust problems as the 208 and other earlier models did... My 500 has quite a high spec so try and get as many goodies as possible.....

Cheers

I would have a search on here, but the main things for a diesel motor would be the EGR and associated pipes and the MAF.

As Baldguy rightly suggests, make sure you pick a car with as many toys as possible and unless you have a specific preference buy an Auto over Manual.....

Thanks again guys. Would always go for auto anyway. The W202 is turning rather more rapidly into Mercedes-Oxide than I hoped so its good to hear that W209 seems to be better in that repsect.

Not many 200Ks around :dk:

There are a few CLK 270 facelifted models around and some CLK320 facelifts too.

What I have noticed on pretty much all the cars I see is that the diesels almost always show an injector fault when I run a quick test on the car. Admittedly its a stored fault and not a current one but a fault none the less.

Please dont take this as hard and fast to buy a petrol. Its just what I've found.

The 320 petrol is a lovely car though as is the 350.

That's not strictly true, some early ones were not galvanised
CLK CLASS – 209 series
All steel panels were galvanised from Quarter 2 2003 production onwards.
During the previous six months (Q4 2002 + Q1 2003) the process was
gradually introduced on the production line and therefore some vehicles
were galvanised during this lead-up period, but not all.

Step away from the 200K's :D

Economy is a bit chronic....

Only petrols smell nowadays, of rotten eggs when you boot them.
Can't remember the last time I sat behind a smelly diesel.

Russ

I get diesel smell from my own C220CDi...when the injector seals let go? DOes anybody know if this problem is less common on newer cars. Newer that is than my 1999 W202?
