Morning all (OMG, I sound like a headmaster). Just got a a new laptop from work, which is wireless enabled. I would like to run my Dell desktop via ethernet, and the new toy via wireless. Do I need a wireless router, or a wireless modem router. I am on BT Broadband via a phone line. Can you recomment a reliable one? Quick responses appreciated as I wanna go to Comet and spend some £££'s. Thanks.

you can use either....

The system needs both a router, and a modem - but you have a modem already, which, if it is ethernet based, then you can plug it into the back of the router.. If its USB based, then you cant.

The easiest solution is a modem/router/wireless/firewall/access point. Personally I would go this route, as its neater, and the setup is a lot simpler (only one box to deal with, and nothing to get to 'talk to each other)

such as this:-

Ok, thanks....so whats the difference between a wireless modem/router and this Wireless-G ADSL Gateway......whats a wireless G Gateway?

You need also to think about positioning for the router -

how far away will the laptop be?
how many walls (and what type of wall) between the laptop and the router? Do you want to reach the garden (and if so, can the router be positioned by a window overlooking the garden)?

The "g" routers will reach across most houses with wood/plasterboard internal walls OK but if your inernal walls are brick (e.g. victorian or 1930's) then you will need either a new larger aerial on the router (assuming the model allows this) or to look at one of the (proprietary) range extender models.

Finally, do you want to share a printer?

If so, ideally plan to get a router with printer sharing capability (or you will have to leave the main PC on to be able to use its printer via the laptop wirelessly).

I bought the Linksys one as detailed above from comet. All seems to be working ok...I just gotta work out the security bit now!
