My air con has over the last couple of days started to smell on first switch on. It's almost like a solvent smell coming through the vents and is so pungent at first that I have to open the window to clear it. After about 45secs the smell has gone and the air-con operates as it should and is ice cold. Am I looking at a regas or would one of them conditioner cans help ? TIA.

Usually it's a bad egg smell due to bacteria in the system.

Solvent smells in my experience usually come through the air vents from screen wash?

Theres a poundland around the corner! I'll try that tomorrow ........thanks

I get this every so often. Smells a bit like thinners. I suppose it could be screen wash.

Its a different smell to my screenwash wif which I have got used to now. Screenwash smells quite sweet whereas this is a strong smell. First time it happened I was driving past the industrial estate up the road and thought it was from a spray booth or similar it was that strong.

I think tpwuk is suggesting its the smell of screen wash that has gone off, its quite common in modern VW cars and its smells like nothing else.

Maybe the industrial smell has impregnated the pollen filter. Replace it and see if that helps.
