hmmm. got it second go.. i dotn see whats so difficult.

that's the funny thing - some people see it immediately, others will spend days puzzling over it. There's an article somewhere about Bill Gates struggling to understand it.

we are not always looking for the obvious :)

I applied a ridiculous amount of science and maths to it, but after 5 mins it became clear.

The sad fact is, the harder you think and the more science and maths you try to apply to this problem, the further away from the solution you get. Just play with it for a little longer and it'll become embarrassingly obvious :)

grasmere, as Shude says it will suddenly bcome embarassingly obvious

things to remember

1, there is only one possible answer for each roll of the dice

2, the answer is always an even number

3, the name of the game is the biggest hint

4, don't look for a complicated solution

It had taken Dr. Duke well over a year himself, and he would always explain that the smarter you were, the longer it took to figure it out.

I'm on track for about 18 months at this rate - I must therefore be a genius :p

Read the name of the game! It really is simple!

well done Ian,

if you want to really confuse people try playing it with dice rather than showing it to them on paper for some reason it seems to take most people much longer to catch on.
